Paperback. Condition: Good. The real history of Britain begins with the Roman occupation, for the Romans were the first to leave substantial documentary and archaeological evidence. After the governorship of Agricola the written sources almost entirely disappear until the early Anglo-Saxon era of the fifth century; but archaeologists have been able to gather a great deal of information about the intervening centuries from excavations of old walled towns, roads, and fortresses dating from the Roman period. Mr. Blair skillfully describes the transition from Roman to Saxon England and shows why Rome's greatest legacy to her former colony--Christianity--flowered within Anglo-Saxon culture. The source material on Saxon England is mainly documentary, as these new inhabitants built in wood and little archaeological evidence has survived. However, Bede's Ecclesiatical History of the English Nation and other great Christian writings, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Beowulf, the stories of Caedmon, and other poems and epics in the Germanic minstrelsy tradition, have revealed much about English economic, social, and cultural life up to the accession of Alfred the Great.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. It's AD 188, and the wild, forested outskirts of the Empire is the last place Libertus, freedman and pavement-maker, wants to visit. But he'd rather face a wolf or bear than an angry patron, so he agrees to accompany Marcus Septimus to the garrison town of Isca (now Caerleon in South Wales). Pausing at Venta, the two men realise they've stepped into a simmering cauldron of social unrest, where the Silures tribe, loyal to former chief Caractacus, seethes under Roman occupation. When Libertus spots a familiar figure, who seems desperate not to be recognised, curiosity gets the better of him. But his pursuit leads him down a dangerous path and into a murky world of racketeering, treason and murder.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Almost 2,000 years ago, Britain was inhabited by tribes living a simple, rural life - but all this changed dramatically when the island was invaded by the formidable Roman army. The Romans stayed for the next 400 years, imposing their laws and their lifestyle. From battles and rebellions to food and fashion, find out what happened when the Britons became citizens of the mighty Roman empire. Covers every aspect of everyday life in Roman Britain in town and country, at work, at play and at war. Through the stories of some of the most famous figures of the time, this book outlines over 400 years of Roman influence in Britain, from Julius Caesar's first invasions and Boudicca's rebellion to the founding of Roman London and the building of Hadrian's Wall, right up to the Roman withdrawal from Britain. Illustrated with a wide variety of different pictures including detailed dramatic artwork reconstructions, photographs of Roman mosaics, statues and other artifacts from Roman Britain and of Roman sites as they look today. Features a large picture map of Roman Britain, showing all the most important Roman sites, towns, roads and army forts.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Libertus, freedman and pavement-maker, finds himself in Londinium at the invitation of the Roman Governor when news arrives of the brutal murder of Caius Monnius, the chief corn-officer. Libertus is asked to investigate but his enquiries lead him in disparate directions. Who is the guilty one? The keeper of the granaries? The sinister Calyx and Glaucus, managers of the best chariot-racing team? Or Fortunatus, the handsome charioteer whose relations with the dead man's wife were reputed to be less than honourable? Not until Libertus finds a second corpse does he begin to understand what lies behind the corruption surrounding the interests of Monnius and the chariots of Calyx. …
