Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Wrappers. Edition limited to 100 numbered copies. Winner of the 2016 George Borrow Trust Essay Competition 2016. "Did Borrow exploit the gypsies as Romantic extras in his books, Romany as picturesque caricature? Von Kaenel-Platt argues that, despite the obvious temptations, he didn't; his gypsies are real people, not extravagant outlaws, and they are grounded in the real world. 'Of all the stereotypes which Borrow could have decided to deploy in his presentation of the Gypsies but notably does not,' she says, 'one in particular is conspicuous by its absence. This is, of course, the notorious trope of Gypsy women and their readily available sexuality.' Ursula is no Carmen and dresses in Sunday best for 'the rural English Sabbath'. Further, 'The language of Lavengro and The Romany Rye is a linguistic world unto itself: lyrical, hypnotic, allusive, incantatory, playful; at once sharply sophisticated and pulsing with pure mystery and wonder. It is a literary universe entirely unique, and all within its purview speak its lingua franca. It may be unrealistic in the world's terms, but it is profoundly right'" (The Book Collector).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Here is "George Borrow and His Circle" by Clement King Shorter, as published by Houghton Mifflin in 1913. This is the First U.S. Edition, hardcover format. It is illustrated with halftone photographs and facsimile reproductions of correspondence and title pages. George Borrow (1803 - 1881), who was a natural linguist, spent a great deal of his time traveling by foot around Europe and other parts of the world. During his travels he became acquainted with the Romani people (Gypsies). These were sympathetically portrayed in two of his books which are semi-autobiographical fictions. Sympathetic portrayals of the Gypsies were rare at that time. "Lavengro" was the first book, and "Romany Rye" followed it closely. The two actually comprise one larger work. Borrow toured through Wales, having learned the language, and his account of travels through Wales in "Wild Wales" was sympathetic to the Welsh - another thing that was not common in the time. ***************************************** Borrow had traveled to Spain as a representative of the Bible Society, and the result was his famous book, "The Bible in Spain". Borrow wrote and published , also, dictionaries of the Romany language and an account of the Romani in Spain : "Zincali : Or, An Account of the Gypsies of Spain". He was a busy man . and a man ahead of his time - certainly a pioneer in compassionate regard for other cultures. ******************************************************* TITLE ; George Borrow and His Circle - Wherein may be found Many Hitherto Unpublished Letters of Borrow and his Friends / AUTHOR : Clement King Shorter (1857 - 1926) [ Shorter was an influential editor and journalist, as well as a literary critic. HBDJ, 1961, 1ST EDITION THUS, EARLY REPRINT,VG+/VG+Larger Format, Tiny Extremites chips wear DJ, THICK BLACK CLOTH GOLD GILT ON SPINE CVR, INDEX 397 pgs , It is a philosophical adventure story of sorts. The book involves meetings with a number of eccentric characters. It also contains what could be called ethnographic material on the customs and views of the Romani women, GYPSY GENTLEMAN, The author obtains a valuable horse from his Romani friend Jasper Petulengro and eventually sells it to a Hungarian at the Horncastle horse fair. As with Lavengro, the story ends rather abruptly with the author's realisation that the Romani language has close links to the Northern Indian languages: he resolves to travel to India but Borrow himself did not do so.
