This edition with an introduction by Cocteau, and translated by Maurice Sachs, who was Cocteau's secretary at the time. Sachs has inscribed and signed the book on the half-title page in the year of publication. Sachs was a black marketeer, anti-semitic, collaborateur, went to Germany 1943 to work with Gestapo, arrested and shot 1945. This is from publication 139 of 200 published (15 of which were hors commerce copies in Roman numerals).Chagall produced the etchings for this work between 1927 and 193…1. The art was commissioned by Ambroise Vollard and first published in this work in 1952. It blends Fontaine's collection of 17th century moral tales with Chagall's distinct style.Each aquatint etching is on BFK Rives woven paper.
