bright orange cloth hardbound 8vo. 8º (octavo). dustwrapper in protective plastic book jacket cover. very fine cond. mint cond. looks new. like new. as new. binding square & tight. covers clean. couple of very faint fox spots on top, other edges clean. contents free of markings. dustwrapper in fine cond. not worn or torn or price clipped. nice clean copy. no library markings or store stamps, no stickers or bookplates, no names, no inking , no underlining, no remainder markings etc ~. first edition. first printing ( # 1 in # line). xviii+68p. ~"This dialogue between Tullio Regge and Primo Levi should belong to the tiny survival bundle which we will one day enshrine into a radiation~proof container, to be burrowed into the earth, or whisked away into outer space, as a testimony of who we are, where we are heading for, where we come from." ~Massimo Piattelli~Palmarini, Il Corriere della Sera. The renowned novelist and chronicler of the Nazi concentration camps Primo Levi, who was also a chemist, and Tullio Regge, a leading physicist in the development of quantum mechanics, shared roots in Italy's Piedmont and a passionate interest in all things natural and human. This is a priceless record of an engaging conversation that will enlighten and amuse the reader on topics from the development of modern physics to the logic of science fiction. In the first few pages of the conversation the talk moves quickly from learning ancient Hebrew to feminism in the Talmud to Regge's boyhood chemistry experiments in an army pharmacy in Italy during World War II ~ "I set fire to everything" ~ and Levi's youthful fascination with science: "I hoped to go very far, to the point of possessing the universe, to understanding the why of things." Levi's and Regge's shared reactions to education in Italy~especially their belief as children in a school plot to conceal scientific knowledge~begin an intriguing and often humorous discussion ranging from the intellectual liberation of their university years, through the institution of Hitler's racial laws in fascist Italy, to scientific responsibility, the birth of the universe, and the future of humanity. Nothing escapes the authors' penetrating comments: space travel, music, computers, and the development of Levi's literary style. Of special interest are reminiscences of Oppenheimer, Wheeler, Godel, and Heisenberg. Dialogo is published here with an introduction by Tullio Regge on Primo Levi and the background of this conversation. The conversation itself was originally conducted for radio broadcast.…

One hot July night that year, in the heart of the Tenderloin, a gambling~house proprietor named Herman Rosenthal was gunned down by hired killers (who made one of the first automobile getaways in history). Circumstances conspired to make the murder one of the most famous of the century. The public was already inflamed about police grafting; and the man arrested for the murder was a known grafter: a tough, handsome police lieutenant, Charles Becker. With the aid of the press, Becker's trial quickly became a public issue. High~minded reformers and the general public insisted on his guilt, and the prospect of convicting a corrupt cop ~ even though those who testified against him were equally corrupt ~ was politically irresistible. For not the first or the last time, the court's proper function of dispensing justice was subverted to vent the public rage; and Becker, almost certainly innocent, wound up in the electric chair at Sing Sing, where even his execution was mishandled. The prosecutor, District Attorney Charles Whitman~as interesting a study in ambition as Becker himself~was elevated to the New York governor's seat by the grateful voters, and later became an active candidate for the Presidency. Against the Evidence is a rich, dramatic, and skillful re~creation of the Becker~Rosenthal case, which reverberated through the city's power structure and involved in one way or another nearly every public figure of the time. As a vivid evocation of the declining years of Tammany Hall and of the Tenderloin in its heyday, Against the Evidence is superb entertainment. As an illustration of the corruptive effects of ambition, of justice gone awry, and of the collaboration~at the public expense~of opposing forces in urban politics, this is an important book, acutely relevant to our own time.…
