THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919). Roosevelt was the Twenty-Sixth President. PS. 14 x 11. September 1898. No place. A photograph signed Theodore Roosevelt Col 1st USV [United States Volunteers] Sept 98. The image shows Roosevelt, wearing a slouch hat and a military uniform, sitting atop his horse; in the background are military tents or barracks. He signed on the mount just below the actual image. The Rough Riders became famous for their dual charges up Kettle Hill and San Juan Hill on July 1, 1898. Roosevelt was the only one with a horse; the mounts for the other troopers were left behind because the transport ships did not have enough space. Roosevelt was promoted to colonel after the Battle of Las Guasimas (June 24, 1898) and led the regiment through the Siege of Santiago (July 3 to July 17, 1898). He autographed this just three months after his triumph at San Juan Hill. On September 15, 1898, the United States First Volunteer Cavalry, aka the Rough Riders, disbanded and returned to the United States. While Theodore Roosevelt signed photographs as President are relatively common, ones signed as a Rough Rider are far scarcer. This one is in mint condition and is professionally framed. A spectacular signed Roosevelt image.
