Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Limited Edition. Includes publisher's slipcase and onion skin jacket. Signed by artist and hand-numbered on limitation page. Jacket spine mostly gone, jacket edges rubbed with loss, slipcase edges a bit toned. 1972 Hard Cover. xvii, [1], 445 pp. 8vo. Introduction by Edward Wagenknecht, illustrations by Noel Sickles. "Roughing It is a book of semi-autobiographical travel literature written by American humorist Mark Twain. It was written during 1870 - 71 and published in 1872 as a prequel to his first book Innocents Abroad. This book tells of Twain's adventures prior to his pleasure cruise related in Innocents Abroad. Roughing It follows the travels of young Mark Twain through the Wild West during the years 1861 - 1867. After a brief stint as a Confederate cavalry militiaman, he joined his brother Orion Clemens, who had been appointed Secretary of the Nevada Territory, on a stagecoach journey west. Twain consulted his brother's diary to refresh his memory and borrowed heavily from his active imagination for many stories in the novel. Roughing It illustrates many of Twain's early adventures, including a visit to Salt Lake City, gold and silver prospecting, real-estate speculation, and his beginnings as a writer. In this memoir, readers can see examples of Twain's rough-hewn humor, which would become a staple of his writing in his later books, such as Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. U.S. astronauts Frank Borman and James Lovell read "Roughing It" aloud to pass the time aboard NASA's Gemini VII, a 14-day-long Earth orbital mission in December 1965. Borman recalls reading the book during an on-camera interview in the 1999 PBS-TV (USA) television program "Nova: To the Moon". Signed by illustrator.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Noel Sickles (illustrator). This book is in excellent gently-used condition. Structurally and cosmetically the exterior of the book is among the best I have seen in a nearly 50 year-old book. The interior of the book is also stellar. The pages are still very bright white and the illustrations are sharp and vivid. The only potentially undesirable aspect is that there are discreet owner marks (see photos of title page and artists signature page, as well as one close-up so that you cant miss it before making your purchase decision. There is also some minor slipcase discoloration, etc. However, the slipcase took 50 years of sun, etc. while protecting the book almost perfectly. Signed by artist.

Early printing of Twainâs first semi-autobiographical work of travel literature, essentially a prequel to The Innocents Abroad. Octavo, bound in three quarter morocco with gilt titles to the spine, fully illustrated by eminent artists with wood engravings throughout. Association copy, inscribed by Mark Twain on the fly-leaf, "For Mrs. P. T. Barnum with kindest wishes of Samuel L. Clemens Oct. 1875." The recipient, Nancy Fish, was the second wife of American showman P. T. Barnum. Twain and Barnum were, by various accounts, friends, mutual admirers and rivals. After visiting Barnumâs American Business Museum in New York City as a teenager, Twain criticized it as âone vast peanut standâ yet upon the opening of Barnumâs Hippodrome in 1875, he remarked, âI hardly know which to wonder at mostâ"its stupendousness, or the pluck of the man who has dared to venture upon so vast an enterprise. I mean to come to see the show,â" but to me you are the biggest marvel connected with it.â He alluded to Barnum frequently in both his published works and private correspondence, and although he received many invitations from Barnum to dine in New York, he always declined. Barnum even proposed that the two collaborate on an anthology of âqueer literatureâ based on letters he received from strangers hoping to join his circus, but Twain expressed little interest in the project. In 1867, Twain published âBarnumâs First Speech in Congressâ, a satire of Reconstruction politics that painted Barnum as a ruthless exploiter of the performers he employed. Twain referred to the work as a âspiritual telegraphâ delivered âto [him] in advance from the spirit worldâ and was certain that Barnum would never be elected to high office. Barnum was married to Charity Hallett from 1829 until her death in 1873, and they had four children. In 1874, a few months after his wifeâs death, he married Nancy Fish, his friendâs daughter who was 40 years his junior. They were married until 1891 when Barnum died of a stroke at his home. He was buried in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport, which he designed himself. In very good condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An outstanding association copy. Dedicated to Twain's mining companion Calvin H. Higbie, Roughing It follows the travels of young Mark Twain through the Wild West during the years 1861â"1867. After a brief stint as a Confederate cavalry militiaman, Twain joined his brother Orion on a stagecoach journey west. The book also chronicles many of Twain's other early adventures including a visit to Salt Lake City, gold and silver prospecting, real-estate speculation, a journey to Hawaii, and his beginnings as a writer.
