This shocking report from the American Unitarian Association and the British Foreign Unitarian Association on the rule of Transylvania, Romania, after the First World War exposes the brutalities and persecutions upon the people of the region. The authors visited over 100 towns and villages, discovering the harsh suppression of the Hungarian population by the new Roumanian authorities and the terror campaign to assert their dominance. Entire communities were forced to adopt Roumanian language, and the report details the horrific punishments inflicted upon those who resisted. Hungarian schools and churches were seized, and the leaders of the community were harassed, imprisoned, and even murdered. The Roumanians had taken over the country, but their actions were nothing short of systematic persecution, openly violating the promises made in the Minorities Treaty. By highlighting the plight of the Unitarian and Presbyterian Churches, the report provides an alarming insight into the broader campaign of suppression of Hungarian language, culture, and religion because of political desires. This significant report provides crucial evidence of those terrible times and exposes the cruel and damaging treatment of a people under the authority of an oppressive regime.
