With the ownership signature of Gerald Kitchingman, dated "March 1921 / Rawalpindi," on the front endpaper and his marginal pencil markings and notes, some in either red or blue pencil, at intervals; Kitchingman (1895-1988) attended Oxford prior to World War I and was later active as a cricket player. Kangchenjunga is the third tallest mountain in the world. Neate289: "This dangerous and exhausting circuit of Kanchenjunga was a classic of mountain exploration." Other than the markings, a very good copy. Original gilt-stamped decorated red cloth (rubbed). (#6057).

FIRST EDITION, roy. 8vo, xvi, 373 pp, [3], 3 maps and 42 illustrations, original cloth, spine fading, hinges worn, library stamp on title-page and small paper label on spine, occasional stop staining, text largely clean, In 1899 Douglas Freshfield traveled to Green Lakes accompanied by the Italian photographer Vittorio Sella. He conducted expeditions around Kangchenjunga (Khangchendzonga) and set out with his party to trek in a circle around Kangchenjunga from the North. When he arrived safely at Dzongri, he lit a big bonfire which could be seen from Darjeeling and the Governor of Bengal ordered a Gun Salute to be fired in his honour. He also became the first mountaineer to examine the western face of Kangchenjunga, which rises from the Kanchenjunga Glacier. Freshfield described Siniolchu as the most superb triumph of mountain architecture and the most beautiful snow mountain in the world.
