Paperback. Condition: New. "You're going out a youngster, but you've got to come back a star," Warner Baxter told Ruby Keeler in the 1933 film 42nd Street. The actor's scripted words would prove prophetic. The film propelled her to stardom. Ruby Keeler's rags-to-riches story is told in this pictorial biography (with text as well). Born on August 25, 1910 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, her father an iceman, her family moved to New York City in 1912. Soon enrolled in the Professional Children's School, she got her first taste of life on the stage, eventually finding her way to Broadway. Her dancing brought her the pivotal role in 42nd Street and she was soon one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood. Her performance in No, No, Nanette in 1971, her first Broadway show in 41 years, met with rave reviews. Keeler's life, including her ill-fated marriage to performer Al Jolson, is recounted here, with many never-before-seen photographs.

Softcover. Condition: Fine. Illustrated softcovers. Fine. 499 pp. with bibliography, index. Listings of Keeler's film, stage and television appearances. Profusely illustrated with photographs, many published here for the first time. Biography of one of the most beloved stars of early entertainment, Ruby Keeler (1909-1993; Keeler always claimed she was born in 1910). A native of Nova Scotia (her full name was Ethel Ruby Keeler), moved with her family at three years old to New York City. A schoolteacher recommended to her mother that Ruby take dance lessons (which the family could not afford but that the teacher gave her anyway). she went to a tap-dancing audition at age 13 (the law said you and to be at least 16 but Ruby and other girls fibbed about their ages) and got the job. At 14, she was cast in a Broadway production that ran for six months. After going to Los Angeles, she was hired to be part of the promotional squad for the first talkie, "The Jazz Singer" She met its star, Al Jolson, and the two were married in 1928. In 1933, she got a part in the smash movie "42nd Street", following which she received a long term contrast with Warner Brothers. She performed her tap dance routines in virtually every film in whcih she appeared and was soon nationally known for them. Ruby retired from show business in the 1940s but would appear (in 1963) in the TV series "The Greatest Show On Earth" a stage comeback in 1971 when she co-starred in the TONY-award winning revival of "No, No, Nanette" that ran for two seasons on Broadway. Keeler died in 1974.
