Condition: Fair. 1945. Fifth Edition. 860 pages. No dust jacket. Blue cloth. Contains black and white in-text illustrations, with fold-out plates throughout. Pages and plates are lightly tanned and foxed throughout. Occasional thumb-marking present. Fold-out maps are lightly tanned with some mild tears to edges. Previous owner's inscription to front free endpaper. Binding is slightly shaky. Boards have moderate edge wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Crushing to spine ends with small splits and fraying to cloth. Scuffing and light marking overall. Mild tanning to spine and edges. Moderate white marking to boards, with some minor brown marks to rear board.

Moderate tanning to pages with heavier foxing and tanning to pastedowns and endpapers. Pencil inscriptions to front endpaper and major tanning to text block edges. Ink stamps to rear endpaper and both hinges are cracked with exposed netting. There is cracks to guttering with exposed netting. Boards have visible rubbing and notable bumping to corners. Fair crushing to spine ends and moderate rubbing to spine. There is fraying to cloth at corners and spine ends.

This reference book was firstt published in 1919 when coal and steam still dominated marine power plants and the diesel was still regarded with some suspicion. By the time the 5th edition, rewritten and enlarged, appeared in 1948 the book had be reprinted many times and had four revisions. Still of interest despite technology changes in the ship's engineroom. 860 pages including extensive index, four b/w photo plates (the list show a fifth but this is actually a fold-out diagram), 10 fold out plans/ diagrams, many other diagrams intext, more than 300 illustrations in all. Few pages adverts fore and aft. Textblock excellent, light foxing to e/papers. Dark blue hard covers with gilt spine titles few spots marks, bumps but still VG.
