Dass die Historiographie, wie man sie heute noch versteht, der Epoche um 1500 und der geistigen Bewegung, die sie vorbereitete, entstammt, das bedarf des Nachweises nicht. Aber cheneinschnitte bezeichnen nicht die Wurzelspitze, sondern das Aufbrechen der Knospe eines neuen Geistes (Stadelmann); die Frage, welche hier behandelt wird, stellt sich für das Vorfeld dieses Bereichs. Mündet sie zuletzt auch in die Weite des gesamten Renaissance-Problems, so ist sie doch auf eine Zeit bezogen, die im eigenen Sinne bilden half, was man vorab in seiner späteren Entfaltung kennt; die so auch mehr ist als nur Vorbereitung. In dem einleitenden Kapitel ist ein Querschnitt durch das Material gegeben, das von verschiedenen Strömungen zusammengetragen, aber in seinem Bezug zu es eschatologischen Bildern, zu der ge schichtlichen Konzeption Joachims von Fiore und zu der historischer Rolle des heiligen Franziskus geeint ist. Als leitender Gesichtspunkt ist die Innerweltlichkeit eines Zeitbewusstseins angenommen, das von dem Gedanken eines letzten entscheidenden Schrittes aus der irdischen Zeit hinaus der Vorstellung einer vollendenden diesseitigen Geschehen zuzustreben scheint.
