The sand banks in the Thames Estuary and the east coast of England are the setting for this astonishing account of "the salvagers", hardy seafarers in small sailing craft who voluntarily saved lives when ship wrecks occured, prior to the introduction of life boats. The author has written a number of books on the maritime history of this area and "The Salvagers" must rate highly among them. Although the first lifeboats appeared in the early 1800s, men in small sailing craft continued to put out, often at great hazard, to rescue wreck survivors, next they would attempt to salvage the wreck and if that was not practicable pillage the vessel of cargo or equipment. These men of the sea developed some ingenious salvage techiques, as they also did for recovering, concealing and disposing of any booty. With the advent of the life boasts the first phase became their responsibility, while steam tugs performed any subsequent "services." The last of many wrecks in the area recorded in the book is 1910, but the prior list of maritime casualties is indeed impressive. The stories, presented in three chronological sections, have a unique characater in that many "recollections and reminiscences" of the salvagers are told using the venacular of the region and the times. In addition to these reconstructions Benham also records many other shipwreck dramas from that hazardous coast.
