Condition: Very good plus. First Edition. 202pp. Demy octavo. Original olive green cloth with black lettering stamped to the front board; gold gilt lettering stamped to the spine. Erratum slip attached at page 177. Some toning to the endpapers and to the top edge of the text block Corners slightly bumped. Some rubbing along the the edges of the boards, with a dent near the middle of the top edge of the front board and one closer to the spine on the top edge of the back board. Previous owner's(Larry McMurtry's) bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. Binding tight and internally clean. Overall, a very good copy. Wells Society #76 "The first chapter of this book originally appeared as a series of four articles in 'The Review of Reviews'. The other chapters were prepared for a lecture-tour of America which did not take place, ill-health causing Wells to cancel the arrangements. The emphasis in the work lies on the foundation of a world state," 72 in G. H. Wells. This copy bears the American author Larry McMurtry's bookplate; it has also been inscribed by Wells to "Dr. L. P. Jacks", who was an English educator, philosopher, and Unitarian minister who rose to prominence in the period from World War I to World War II. Jacks was also a writer and became friends with Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde in the 1890s. A fantastic association copy with Wells's signature.
