Exemplaire de deuxième émission avec mention fictive de troisième édition et titres renouvelés à la date de 1833 afin d'intégrer le volume au…x oeuvres complètes de Victor Hugo. Drame en cinq actes et en vers, Le Roi s'amuse, représenté pour la première fois le 22 novembre 1832 à la Comédie-Française, fut interdit dès le lendemain ; le pouvoir louis-philippard goûtant très modérément les critiques à l'encontre de la monarchie et de la noblesse. "Cette cause, Messieurs, n'est pas une cause ordinaire. [?], c'est le procès d'un citoyen à un gouvernement. Au fond de cette affaire, il y a une pièce défendue par ordre ; or, une pièce défendue par ordre, c'est la censure [?]". Hugo intenta alors un procès au gouvernement, devant le tribunal de Commerce. Plaidant lui-même, il y prononça le 19 décembre 1832, un discours, véhément manifeste politique pour la défense des libertés, imprimé par Renduel pour s'adjoindre à la préface de l'édition. On retiendra notamment cette déclaration prophétique : "Aujourd'hui on me fait prendre ma liberté de poète par un censeur, demain on me fera prendre ma liberté de citoyen par un gendarme ; aujourd'hui on me bannit du théâtre, demain on me bannira du pays ; aujourd'hui on me bâillonne, demain on me déportera [?]". Au-delà de la formidable tribune qu?elle offrit à un Hugo libéral, la censure, paradoxalement lui épargna la prolongation d?un monumental four. Destinée à sombrer dans les oubliettes du théâtre romantique, Le roi s?amuse atteindra une postérité aussi inattendue qu?universelle, à partir de 1851, grâce à l?opéra de Verdi, Rigoletto, dont le livret de Francesco Maria Piave reprend l?histoire, transposée de la cour de François Ier à celle du duc de Mantoue. Titre, à la date de 1832, illustré d'une vignette gravée sur bois par Andrew, Leloir et Best d'après un dessin de Tony Johannot et tirée sur chine appliqué. Cette composition représente Triboulet reconnaissant le corps de sa fille Blanche (acte V, sc. 4), avec au fond la grève de la Seine et la porte des Tournelles illuminée par l'éclair. Exemplaire unique tiré sur papier de Chine pour l'éditeur Eugène Renduel, enrichi de deux pièces additionnelles : - reçu autographe à l'encre brune daté du 6 janvier 1836, signé de Camille Rogier, de ?trois cents francs, valeur de trois aquarelles pour Cromwel, le roi s'amuse et angelo? (un demi-feuillet in-8). - Discours prononcé par M. Victor Hugo le 19 décembre 1832, dev le tribunal du commerce, pour contraindre le Théâtre-Français à représenter, et le gouvernement à laisser représenter Le Roi s'amuse, imprimé à part et distribué ?gratuitement aux personnes qui ont acheté les précédentes éditions du drame?
