Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Duodecimo, 126 pages, maroon cloth, inked inscription on rear flyleaf. Scott's first appearance in a book was in the First Series of this series [c.f. More First Books catalogue by 7 Gables Bookshop]. This, presumably, is his second book appearance. However, in a printed letter here, poet Witter Bynner, sponsor of the Witter Bynner Scholastic Poetry Prize, chose a Miss Dorothy Emerson as the most promising of the poets selected for inclusion here. In fact, Miss Emerson later became the Poetry Editor for Scholastic Magazine. Dorothy Agard Ansley later had a poem in Wierd Tales issue 1939 vol. 39 no. 1. G. Whitfield Cook here later worked as a novelist, and scriptwriter in Hollywood for Hitchcock.

A collection of writings by the nation's high school students, including a six-page essay by the 17 year old Bernard Malamud of Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn: "Life From Behind a Counter," an account of his experiences as a clerk in his father's store, for which Malamud won second prize. Other promising high school writers given honorable mention but not published in the book included Jean Stafford and George Marion O'Donnell. Malamud's first appearance between hard covers; his first short stories were published in 1943. A very early appearance, 20 years before his first book, *The Natural*. Scarce in jacket.
