Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. BRILLAINT: DISTURBING: INCANDESCENT: EXHILIRATING: NEW First Edition hardcover (Orig. 2008) Fourth Printing: NEW handsomely-designed LOA jacket: IMPECCABLE Condition throughout * 5.0" x 8.12" x 1.50", 0.76 kg, x+1140 (1150) pp ABOUT THE BOOK: "The most outré science fiction writer of the 20th century has finally entered the canon," exclaimed Wired Magazine upon The Library of America's May 2007 publication of Philip K. Dick: Four Novels of the 1960s, edited by Jonathan Lethem. The following year came the companion volume collecting 5 novels that offer a breathtaking overview of the range of this science-fiction master. Philip K. Dick (1928-82) was a writer of incandescent imagination who made & unmade world-systems w/ ferocious rapidity & unbridled speculative daring. "The floor joists of the universe," he once wrote, "are visible in my novels." "Martian Time-Slip" (1964) unfolds on a parched & thinly colonized Red Planet where schizophrenia is a contagion & the unscrupulous seek to profit from a troubled child's time-fracturing visions. "Dr. Bloodmoney, or How We Got Along After the Bomb" (1965) chronicles the deeply-interwoven stories of a multi-racial community of survivors, including the scientist who may have been responsible for World War III. Famous, among other reasons, for a therapy session involving a talking taxicab, "Now Wait for Last Year" (1966) explores the effects of JJ-180, a hallucinogen that alters not only perception, but reality. In "Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said" (1974), a television star seeks to unravel a mystery that has left him stripped of his identity. "A Scanner Darkly" (1977), the basis for the 2006 film, envisions a drug-addled world in which a narcotics officer's tenuous hold on sanity is strained by his new surveillance assignment: himself. Mixing metaphysics & madness, phantasmagoric visions of a post-nuclear world & invading extraterrestrial authoritarians, & all-too-real evocations of the drugged-out America of the 70s, Dick's work remains exhilarating & unsettling in equal measure. * LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation's literary heritage by publishing, & keeping permanently in print, America's best & most significant writing. The LiOA series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, & ribbon markers, & are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries. * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: PHILIP K. DICK (1928-1982) was the author of 36 novels & more than 120 stories, including such celebrated works as "The Man in the High Castle" & "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (the basis for the film Blade Runner). He was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2005. * ABOUT THE EDITOR: JONATHAN LETHEM is the author "Fortress of Solitude" & many other novels & story collections. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine LOA volume for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to international destinations at our posted rates.

Hardcover. Condition: New. First edition. 189 pp. Oblong sextodecimo. Illustrated paper over boards. No dustjacket as issued by publisher. A haunting graphic version of one of Philip K. Dick's most popular and best-selling novels. Bob Arctor is a dealer of the lethally addictive drug Substance D, which he also takes in massive quantities. Fred is the police agent assigned to tail and eventually bust him. What Fred doesn't know is that Substance D gradually splits the user's brain into two distinct, combative entities, and that he is, in fact, in frantic pursuit of himself. A Scanner Darkly is caustically funny and razor sharp in its depiction of drug-induced paranoia and madness; it's an industrial-strength stress test of identity as unnerving as it is riveting. The novel is captured in this brilliant graphic vision, composed entirely of stills from the movie. Writer/Director Richard Linklater shot a live-action film, starring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, and Winona Ryder, and then animated over the underlying images. The result is an eerily lifelike, richly detailed animation that translates beautifully to the page.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First Edtion, first printing with G51 on page 216. I am selling off the inventory from my father's legacy book business, "R. Thompson Books". All the remaining copies of this book have been sitting in the publisher's box since they were purchased in 1977. The protagonist, Bob Arctor, lives in a household of drug users but is also an undercover cop. Arctor becomes addicted to substance D. The story was inspired by P.K. Dick's own experiences in the early 1970s being addicted to amphetamines and having an ever-changing stream of young housemates, at his suburban house in Marin County, CA, who were mostly drug users. A Scanner Darkly was one of many of Dick's stories that were made into films. Richard Linklater directed the eponymous film which was released in 2006. Linklater originally intended to film Dick's novel "Ubik" published in 1966. "A Scanner Darkly" stars Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Winona Ryder, and Woody Harrelson. Winona Ryder's father, an antiquarian book dealer as well as an author himself. He was friends with both P.K. Dick and Timothy Leary. Leary was Winona's godfather. She brought Linklater a note Dick had left for Leary. The leather jacket that Winona wore in the movie once belonged to P.K. Dick and left behind from the time Winona's father shared an apartment with Dick in the 1960s. My favorite Sci-Fi author, I started reading PKD's books when I was 11 in 1968.
