Henri Étienne Sainte-Claire Deville (18181881), a French chemist, is best known for his later contributions to metallurgy and inorganic chemistry, particularly in the industrial production of aluminum and platinum refining. However, his 1841 thesisÉtudes sur l'Essence de Térébenthinerepresents an early systematic investigation into turpentines chemical properties, preceding his groundbreaking metallurgical work. This doctoral dissertation, presented to the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Paris, focuses on the chemical composition, physical properties, and reactions of turpentine oil, a volatile substance derived from conifer resins, widely used in paint, medicine, and industrial applications. Deville analyzed the molecular structure of turpentine oil, which is primarily composed of terpenes, such as pinene. His work clarified the role of hydrocarbons in the composition of essential oils. The study includes experimental distillation methods to separate and purify turpentine components.
