A collection of verse in Scots (as popposed to an anthology of Scottish poems) starting with anonymous verse of the 1300s through to poets born in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Also includes a glossary of early Scots and modern Scots. Condition: A good solid copy, though the spine has a water-stain and is faded, and a few spots of fraying to the rear joint. The contents are very good. Signed by notable previous own.

A newspaperman, entrepreneur, and land speculator before being elected to the House of Commons in 1900, by 1905, Scott had become leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal party and premier of the new province. after the 1905 election, Scott embarked on a program to build the province's infrastructure, including the Legislative Building and the University of Saskatchewan. He believed that agriculture was a vital component in the fabric of Saskatchewan life, and by including farm leadership in cabinet, he created a political climate founded on agriculture. Scott's government was also instrumental in enacting prohibition and establishing female suffrage. The fruits of Walter Scott labours in education, agriculture, and public policy continue to be harvested in Saskatchewan today, but few remember who planted the original seeds. Alexander Gray, economist and writer, and the club's immediate past President (the current President was Eric Linklater), concentrates much of his speech on Scott's background in the ballads, but sums up, "What Scotland owes to Burns and Scott is beyond all computation; but I am sure that, at least in the matter of the international balance of payments, she owes more to Scott than to Burns. It was Scott rather than Burns who made all manner of people with rather dubious claims anxious to establish their Scottish ancestry. And politically, Scott was the great reconciler. He then discusses Scott's work: his songs and ballads, his use of the Scottish accent, his appeal south of the border, the historical novels, the lives of Scott, his journal, and his greatest novels and historical romances with references to Trevelyan, Trevor Roper, J. C. Corson, Leavis, Compton Mackenzie, Donald Davie and John Buchan. Handwritten signed postcard addressed from Michael ? to Miss Margaret Lane, Blackbridge House, Beaulieu, Hants. Inghilterra dated Set. 25 postmarked 1970 and consisting of about 100 words in which he writes about his holiday and asks why Selina [Hastings] cancelled her trip. Newspaper cutting of a review of the book by C. P. Snow taken from The Financial Times, 1 Nov 1970 loosely inserted includes some passages underlined in Lane's hand. Margaret Lane (1907-1994) journalist, biographer (Beatrix Potter, Samuel Johnson in particular) and novelist. She married firstly Edgar Wallace's son and secondly Francis Hastings, 16th Earl of Huntingdon with whom she had two daughters, the eldest being the writer Selina Hastings. Rev J. A. Bramley wrote a piece for the Hibbert Journal on 'The Challenges of D. H. Lawrence, April 1960. Lower corner of one page (p. 189) creased.
