A collection of texts 'which explore the no-man's-land between poetry and prose, direct reference and distant connotation, private and public language: areas in which the semantic, visual and aural aspects of language tend simultaneously toward multiple ambiguity and refusal of common meaning'. Moderate rubbing to the wrappers, superficially and to extremities, the yellow at the spine faded to white, but generally crisp. This copy has been signed by the author ('Alan') and inscribed to Pete (Hodgkiss), 'who published some of it first'. An autograph card signed is loosely inserted, advertising Halsey's bookshop. Hardcover. Edited by Michael Sragow. 8vo. Tan cloth with gilt spine lettering, ivory slipcase. 748pp, (5pp). Illustrations, decorative endpapers, sewn-in tan satin page marker. Fine/fine. A tight and pristine first edition thus (volume 160) of this selection, elaborated on title page as "Agee on Film: Reviews and Comments / Uncollected Film Writing / The Night of the Hunter / Journalism and Book Reviews." Interesting autograph addition: Agee's screenplay "Night of the Hunter" was turned into the 1955 film noire thriller starring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters and Lillian Gish -- this last of whom has boldly signed in black fineline a fine heavy stock 5" X 3" card tipped to an inner flyleaf. Gish (1896-1993) who portrays Rachel Cooper in the film, was nicknamed "The First Lady of the Silent Screen" and her many films ranged from silent classics such as "Birth of a Nation" (1915) to made-for-television dramas such as "The Whales of August" (1987). Quite an unusual copy. Laid in is the LOA leaflet for this volume.
