Buddy, the first Catholic bishop of San Diego and a primary founder of the University of San Diego. Serving as a comprehensive daily Catholic prayer book and liturgical resource, it includes a brief explanation before each part of the Holy Mass to guide the reader through the Latin liturgy of the era. Contains the traditional Latin approvals, specifically a Nihil Obstat by Thomas Egan and an Imprimatur by Richard H. Ackerman. Appointed by Pope Pius XI in 1936, Bishop Buddy led the newly formed Diocese of San Diego from its inception until his death in 1966. Along with Mother Rosalie Hill, he co-founded the University of San Diego (originally separate colleges for men and women). He envisioned a major Catholic university on a hill ('Alcalá Park') and oversaw the construction of its landmark buildings, including the Immaculata Church. He was known for his energetic leadership, establishing numerous parishes, elementary schools, and high schools across the diocese to serve a rapidly growing population. Even before becoming bishop, he had a strong record of social work, founding St. Vincent's cafeteria and shelter for the indigent in St. Joseph, Missouri, during the Great Depression.
