Originaire de Tours, le chevalier Pierre Forget, Sieur de Beauvais et de la Picardière (1578-1638), fut ambassadeur en Allemagne et à Constantinople, d'où il fit deux voyages en Grèce. La page de titre du présent volume fait état de sa qualité de "Conseiller du Roy en son Conseil d'Estat, et Maistre d'Hostel Ordinaire en sa Maison". "Pierre Forget, étant chargé d'affaires et de missions diplomatiques, abandonna l'impression de ses sentiments à des amis qui n'en surveillèrent pas l'exécution à son gré, ce qui l'obligea à en faire de nouvelles éditions revues par lui" (Viollet-le-Duc, qui ne possédait qu'un exemplaire de la quatrième édition posthume de 1646). Cette première édition imprimée alors que l'auteur était en voyage est particulièrement rare. Certains des 1042 quatrains moraux présentés ici furent insérés dans différents recueils collectifs publiés au 17e siècle. Exemplaire très court de marges, en particulier dans la partie supérieure. Le couteau du relieur a rogné le titre courant, la pagination, et une partie de la première ligne de l'avis au lecteur. Le texte des poésies est resté intact. Agréable exemplaire par ailleurs de ce livre très rare, soigneusement établi au 19e siècle (ex-libris collé du Marquis de Gaillon). Viollet-le-Duc, I, 453 (pour la quatrième édition). Brunet indique à tort, dans son Supplément, que Forget est resté inconnu à Du Verdier et à Goujet (voir Goujet, Bibliothèque Française, XVI, p.8, la notice détaillée qui lui est consacrée).

Ouvrage relié en maroquin rouge d'époque par Le Gascon, qui a oeuvré régulièrement pour la bibliothèque royale; les plats avant et arrière sont marqués au fer aux armes du cardinal de Richelieu, et encadrés, le dos lisse orné de six fleurons; les chants des plats sont ornés à la roulette. Tranches dorées. Ex-libris sur le contre-plat: Lafitte-Vigordane (partiellement déchiré), André Gutzwiller; sur le 3e f.: ex-libris portant "Tout y croît", provenant sans doute du château du même nom ; page de titre: ex-libris manuscrit: Michon. Edition réglée à la plume extrêmement rare. L'ouvrage est bien complet, notamment de l'achevé d'imprimer de Deny Langlois, gravé et illustré, en date du [28 juillet] 1636. La coiffe supérieure est fissurée sur deux centimètres, sans aucun manque, les deux coins inférieurs sont légèrement frottés, quelques mouillures éparses à l'intérieur, mais l'ouvrage est élégant et en bon état. Ce livre, déjà édité à Lyon par G. Citerne en 1630, puis en 1631, est imprimé ici pour la troisième fois en 1636 par Toussaint du Bray, précédé de sa dédicace habituelle au Cardinal. Le présent exemplaire a précisément fait partie de la bibliothèque personnelle d'Armand Jean du Plessis, cardinal de Richelieu (1585-1642). Pierre Forget, seigneur de Beauvais et de La Picardière, secrétaire de la chambre du roi, est né en 1569. Poète moraliste assez en vogue à l'époque, connu notamment pour l'excellence de ses quatrains, il a publié, outre "Les Sentimens Universels", un "Hymne à la reine régente" paru en 1613. Il est mort à Paris en 1638. Ouvrage de bibliophilie extrêmement rare, à la provenance prestigieuse (Source: De Roméo Arbour, Un éditeur d'uvres littéraires au XVIIe siècle: Toussaint du Bray (1604-1636), n. 349, p. 290; Jean-Louis Chalmel, Histoire de Touraine depuis la conquête des Gaules par les Romains, t. IV, 1841, pp. 178-181).
