Condition: Near fine in very good jacket. dj. First printing. First American edition, in the more common second-issue dust jacket featuring blurbs of acclaim from the likes of E.M. Forster and Truman Capote. A beautiful copy of Knowles's classic of an uneasy coming-of-age, set at a boys' boarding school among the desperately car…efree 16-year-olds of 1942: too young, still, to be drafted into the war outside; too old to evade the responsibilities and consequences that follow from the breaking of their fraught and fragile private bonds. The book that set E.M. Forster off "thinking of the Philoctetes of Sophocles," in a line which stands out even amidst the crowded field of superlatives offered by English and American reviewers overcome by the novel's "exceptional power and distinction" (The Times). The first-issue jacket is significantly rarer, found primarily on review copies. 8'' x 5.5''. Original blue-grey cloth. In original unclipped ($3.50) second-issue dust jacket. [6], 186 pages. Jacket lightly toned, rubbed. Front flap corners trimmed (but price intact). Minor sunning to board extremities. Else clean and sound overall.
