First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, stated, of this collection of short stories by Canadian writer, lecturer, astrologer, mystic, and founder, in 1934, of the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles. Published in 1925 by The Hall Publishing Co. 8vo (5.5" x 8"), 165 pages, black cloth stamped in gilt with elaborate dragon device to front board. Signed by Hall on the front free endpaper: "Very Sincerely, Manly Hall." With color frontispiece by Homer Conant and the scarce printed spiderweb tissue guard intact. One of Hall's earliest and most atmospheric productions, preceding The Secret Teachings of All Ages by three years and embodying the fusion of occult philosophy and symbolic fiction that would define his early career. A notably well-preserved example: gilt exceptionally bright, binding fresh and tight, contents clean. Light rubbing and bumping to extremities. Contemporary owner signature dated 1942 beneath author's signature. A highly attractive signed copy of a fragile and increasingly elusive early Manly P Hall title in the black cloth issue, arguably more visually dynamic than the seemingly more common yellow cloth issue.

The author writes: "In an erratic moment we conceived the notion of attempting to portray certain great occult truths through the medium of fiction. We believe many people will read stories who would never consider a philosphic dissertation on the subject. For that reason we have gathered together a number of incidents in o way related except by the common denominator of fantasy. No claim is made as to historical accuracy, nor is it claimed that any of the stories are reasonable or logical. To certain types of minds they are both; to other types, neither. But more and more our world is realizing that it is dangerous to say 'This is so' or 'This is not so.' The absurdities of yesterdays are the facts of today. Manly P. Hall. Los Angeles, Aug. 20, 1925." Manly Palmer Hall was an enormously prolific author and mystic who in his lifetime published more than 150 books and articles, and delivered thousands of lectures. He founded the Philosophical Research Society, dedicated to the study of religion, mythology, and metaphysical science. Signed.
