Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Reprint of the New and Revised Edition. Large octavo. 860pp. Top gilt. Tipped onto the front flyleaf is a signed 1881 note from Clarke's Villa Novello estate in Genoa, Italy, in which she expresses her "kind greetings and good wishes," as well a torn portion of the note's original envelope. Rebound in full leather by Stikeman & Co. (stamp at top corner of front endpaper), with five raised bands, gilt spine titles, and marbled endpapers; the original board cloth has been tipped onto flyleaves at rear. Additionally, tipped in between the title and dedication pages are three printed sheets, the first two containing an explanation of Clarke's spelling of "Shakespere" and a list of her other published works, the third a "Preface to New and Revised Edition." Both of these addendums bear 1881 dates, and were presumably sent to the original owner along with the note from Clarke. Moderate rubbing and wear to the board corners, bands, and hinges, with some small tears and loss at crown of spine. Binding sound. A major work by one of Victorian England's most pre-eminent Shakespearean scholars. Inscribed by Author(s).

Condition: near fine. 1st British Edition. xv, 517pp. Octavo. Navy cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Light wear to ends of spine. Clean, tight text block. There are a few small notes on the rear paste-down presumably from the previous owner refering to the text. In dust jacket, not price clipped, with only light wear to edges and some very mild chipping to ends of spine with one small closed tear. Placed loosely inside are two clean clipped articles relating to Hughes. A fantastic association copy. near fine Double Signed and Inscribed by the author. Signed by the author in black ink on half title and inscribed by the author in black ink on the title page. The inscription reads "For Patricia Kathleen, with my very best wishes from Ted, 12th August 1993". Edward James "Ted" Hughes (17 August 1930 ?28 October 1998) was an English poet and children's writer. Critics routinely rank him as one of the best poets of his generation. Hughes was British Poet Laureate from 1984 until his death. This critical magnus opus looks at Shakespeare's use of the two most significant poems in the archaic world and argues that they later provided the template for the construction of every one of Shakespeare's plays. The inscription is written to Patricia Kathleen Page, commonly known as P. K. Page, who was a Canadian poet. She was the author of over 30 published books: of poetry, fiction, travel diaries, essays, children's books, and an autobiography. She was also known as a visual artist, who exhibited her work as P.K. Irwin at a number of venues in and out of Canada. Her works are in permanent collections of National Gallery of Canada and Art Gallery of Ontario.

Books measure 8" × 11½" and the Slipcase Box measures 7" x 8½" x 12" Echoing the divisions in the First Folio, the plays are divided between three volumes The Comedies, The Tragedies and The Histories. Uncluttered by notes, and with a generous setting, the 38 plays are beautifully readable and follow The Arden Shakespeare Third Series Complete Works the most up-to-date and authoritative versions. Although the First Folio comprised 36 plays, both Pericles and The Two Noble Kinsmen are included for completeness. On 8 November 1623, the First Folio of Shakespeare's plays was registered, bringing together the great playwright's work as a single printed collection for the first time and saving it for centuries to come. 400 years on, Folio is delighted to commemorate the anniversary with a sensational limited edition: a triumph of the bookmakers' art and a legacy for future generations, which includes a foreword by Dame Judi Dench and an introduction by Gregory Doran, the RSC's Artistic Director Emeritus. Neil Packer's designs for the elegant, bespoke bindings are inspired by Elizabethan blackwork embroidery his artwork perfectly replicated in sumptuous silk and linen jacquard cloth woven by Stephen Walters & Sons, the oldest silk-weaving company in Britain. Packer has also contributed 40 illustrations and designs for the presentation box. The text, set in black and red throughout, was printed by Northend in Sheffield. Smith Settle, also in Yorkshire, renowned for exemplary craftsmanship, have bound the books employing traditional techniques, and, finally, Stan Lane, the last of the famous Monotype artisan printers, has printed the limitation tip on his original Heidelberg press at his studio in Gloucestershire. Signed and numbered by Neil Packer, the tip is in the front of The Comedies. About William Shakespeare Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire in April 1564, Shakespeare is widely considered to be the world's greatest dramatist and the most influential writer in English. Along with at least 38 plays, he wrote over 150 sonnets and three longer narrative poems. In the late 1500s Shakespeare is noted as being in London, a member of a leading theatrical company, The Lord Chamberlain's Men who performed at the original Globe Theatre. They became The King's Men following the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603. Shakespeare retired to Stratford-upon-Avon where he died on 23 April 1616. He trained at the Colchester School of Art before becoming a full-time illustrator in 1984 with the publication of his first children's book. He has illustrated a number of titles for The Folio Society, including I, Claudius (1994), The Name of the Rose (2001), Catch-22 (2004), One Hundred Years of Solitude (2006), Foucault's Pendulum (2016), Mythical Beasts (2021), The Divine Comedy (2022) and The Complete Plays by William Shakespeare (2023). Packer's work has been exhibited in London, Singapore and the United States. About Dame Judi Dench Since playing Ophelia in Hamlet at The Old Vic Theatre over 60 years ago, Judi Dench has garnered wide popular and critical admiration for a career marked by outstanding performances in classical and contemporary roles on both stage and screen. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. The Cambridge Edition is limited to seven hundred and fifty numbered copies, signed by the illustrator Rockwell Kent. Bound in publisher's original full blue cloth with the title stamped in gilt on the spine, top edge gilt, fore edge uncut. This set was originally issued in a single slipcase for both volumes and was extremely heavy. We had two new blue cloth slipcases lined with paper made to make it more manageable. The original vellum labels stamped in gilt were difficult to read from any distance so we had substituted two new red leather labels stamped in gilt which matched some of the coloring on the title page. Signed.
