Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Cracking to front hinge with netting exposed. Binding slightly loose. Rear free endpaper with piece cut out. Boards have moderate shelf wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces heavily tanned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering to spine is dulled but remains brighter on front.

Binding tight, beige pictorial boards with paste-on of men shooting at Ashanti tribesmen.293 pp. plus 10 pages of another story by Frances Baden (One True Heart) plus ads. 8 illustrations, no date, but date on endpaper is Christmas 1910; the story of a white boy, Edward Ashton, who is taken captive by the Ashanti ( people of south-central Ghana) and must use all of his pluck to survive. From the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, much of the territory of the present-day country of Ghana belonged to the Ashanti Empire. Henty (1832-1902) was a Victorian literary phenomenon whose 144 books and myriad short stories have long enthralled adults and children alike. .

Slight rubbing and wear to green decorative boards, especially top and bottom of spine but nothing significant, gilt illustrations to front board and spine are undamaged. Internally a few signs of wear, looks like front end paper and half title have been torn out, front hinge is just starting to wear, no turned over page corners, apart from damage described a nice condition copy, just some light spotting at several points in the text.
