Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Gilbert Riswold (illustrator). Second impression. Heywood Broun (1888-1939) was a journalist, sportswriter and newspaper columnist whose unusual Christmas story (sometimes called "The Shepherd's Whisper") was first published in a limited edition in 1926. It tells the story of Amos, a shepherd who declined to go with the other shepherds to see the newborn Christ child in the manger, choosing to stay behind to tend his flock. Here, the tale gets an equally unusual artistic interpretation from illustrator Gilbert Riswold (who, spookily enough considering that Heywod Broun had a son called Heywood Broun, was the son of Gilbert Riswold, a sculptor). Anyway, the pictures are quite striking; monotone apart from Amos's crook which is picked out in gold ink. Riswold's note at the end of the book explains that he has made the illustrations look like they were done on a parchment scroll in the "hope of bringing the reader closer to the ancient setting of the story". Riswold has signed the title page with "Gil" written across his printed name. While the book is a very good copy indeed, marred only by a name on the endpaper obliterated with marker, and minor wear to spine ends, the price-clipped dust jacket is pretty ragged. There's wear to edges with nicks, chips and larger pieces missing from back panel. Looks OK behind the acetate. Signed by Illustrator(s).
