Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. Prepared for the Directorate General of Mineral Resources, Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Jiddah, Saudi Arabia. Original USGS green printed wraps 22x28cm. (1), iii, 60pp complete with full-page map in-text, and colour folding map in the back pocket. Report very good, bumped to lower corner, with inscription to the front, folding map fine. This appears to be rare with Worldcat recording 8 locations, not all of which marked as "Preliminary" or published in Jeddah (ExxonMobil, Hebrew University Mount Scopus Library, Penn State, Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, USGS x3). The presentation inscription by the lead author to the front cover reads: "To Brian - This is a once-over-lightly view of Saudi Arabian deposits. It will be followed by more detailed reports. Ralph". Ralph Jackson Roberts (1911-2007) and William Greenwood (1939-92) spent six years in Saudi Arabia, mapping ore deposits and contributing to the development of its mining industry. Produced as part of a wider Saudi-USGS programme, the team identified belts and deposits of copper, zinc, silver and gold, with a very favourable outlook: "Saudi Arabian metal deposits known thus far contain reserves in the 2 billion dollar range. Further exploration should result in discoveries that could significantly increase this amount; Saudi Arabia may well have workable metallic and nonmetallic mineral resources for industrial developments in many parts of the Kingdom" (p1). This would have been of great interest to a country seeking to diversify its economy away from oil. The report includes structural framework, types of deposits, distribution, genesis, mineral belts, suggested exploration target areas, and references. The in-text map shows mineral belts. The loose "Generalized Geologic Map of the Arabian Shield, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia", 1974, 72x64cm, 1:4,000,000 was compiled by Greenwood, DG Hadley and DL Schmidt, from USGS, French, Saudi and Japanese sources, and printed by Dar al Asfahani & Co, Jeddah. Inscribed by Author(s).
