This is the best practical guide to tree work that I have come across. Although fairly pricey it covers every woodland operation you can think of, with concise explanations and clear diagrams. Shigo's vision of tree work and its place in society leads him, at times, to publish opinions which are considered controversial, but I have met no-one who can find fault with this book. Dr Alex Shigo is one of the worlds leading authorities on trees. His extensive research has, over the years, dramatically changed the way in which tree care is viewed. "Modern Arboriculture" looks step by step at the internal processes of trees and how they should be cared for accordingly. Shigos written style takes a bit of getting used to, but once you do, this book will be indispensible. From Arboricultural officers to the interested tree owner, "Modern Arboriculture" is essential reading. A Great book for those wanting to learn about how trees work. Alex Shigo makes complex matters very easy to understand and is perhaps the greatest champion for the cause of tree care alive. He is passionate about his subject and immensely well informed. His passion for trees is infectious. On the down side it is pricey (depending on how you value knowledge) and lacks the production finesse of the bigger publishers. Shame really, because SUCH an important book should be more widely available. Dr. Shigo's pic are basic but easy to follow. The book isn't very cohesive though. Reads like a lot of well written pamphlets. A must have, if you can afford it!
