Catalogue of Books on Naval Architecture, European Magazine, 1792: This book contains dimensions of the ships of the Royal Navy, very exact, with some judicious remarks on their property and an exact draught of an eighty gun ship. The author intended adding a draught of each class. He was brought up in a Royal Yard, was very industrious; but was discharged for copying draughts, and having papers in his possession. Such is the jealous infatuation that the superior officer in our establishment does not wish any workmen to be possessed of more knowledge than to handle and know the use of his tools; this is done under the pretence of secrecy, in keeping our arts from our enemies; which pretence is carried so far as to exclude a Briton admittance without especial orders and porter to attend him, while foreigners of any nation, if cloathed in an officers uniform, find ready admittance. AJS: There is a four page foreword by Mr David Roberts, the publisher, who places the book in context with other works of the period. The publisher included a number draughts from Admiralty sources, and although there is no list of plates as such, we list these below as follows: Page 146. Draught of a Ship proposed to carry 80 guns, undated, double-page foldout plate. Page 203. Royal Sovereign, 100 guns, undated, folding plate. Page 205. Impregnable, 90 guns, undated, folding plate.
