Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket photo by the Courage Shire Horse Centre (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners slightly bruised, not price clipped (£15.00) long amusing gift inscription on ffep, verso ffep and half title page, which I quote in full: 'To Alan with fondest love from Mum (in blue pen) and in brown pen (from Dad?) and me. You wrote to Father Christmas and asked him for this book, But at I think that at the price tag you didn't take a look, I raked around and scraped enough to buy this half of it, I borrowed from the Farm account, the Sheep will have a fit - Two sacks of red bar nuts and one of oats ground coarse, They'll have to do without, for half a book about a horse! There's only one condition to which you might agree, Before the two halves together you may simultaneously see. It's quite simple, just an idea, You are not allowed to get: Cos I can't afford to keep one in the garden as a Pet! Lucky old Alan! Internally clean tight and square, overall a very interesting copy. 834pp, lavishly illustrated. A history of the (now rare breed) Shire Horse, the society's they registered with and them men who have been involved with them. Keith Chivers held a lifelong interest in Shire Horses, which is displayed by his active work researching the breed, culminating in his numerous published works. Thiss book 'The Shire Horse, A History of the Breed, the Society and the Men', is regarded as the definitive history of these horses. He was also a regular contributor to the Shire Horse publications, Heavy Horse World, and Heavy Horse and Driving, from the 1970's up until his death in 1998. During the 1980's he played an important role in the Shire Horses Society's History With A Future project, which investigated the role of the Shire Horse in the modern world. He was also involved in establishing the Shire Horse Archive, where his own research notes were complimented by donations from individuals, and which he helped to run alongside his daughter Elizabeth. Quite a scarce book, also a huge heavy book (like the horses), extra postage may be required.

First Edition
Hard Cover. First Edition. The Society and the Men (J A Allen 1976). First UK Edition Deluxe Issue. # 61 of an Edition limited to 100 numbered copies in an elegant calf binding with a shire horse embossed in gold on the front board each signed by Lord Cornwallis with a special preface by him. All edges gilt. In matching slipcase that uses the same marbling as the marbled end-papers inside the book. A wonderful production. This book is a work of massive scholarship, the first full length history ever published, of one of the world's greatest breeds of horses, the men who bred them and the Society which has perpetuated interest in them until modern times. The author has amassed a vast amount of information and references unobtainable elsewhere culled from parish and private records and published here for the first time. But this is no dry "breed history", this book is a compelling story of the grandest and most massive of horses and of a special variety of men told with authority, wit and style. In about 1200, King John imported from the Low Countries about 100 black hairy-legged Flemish stallions. These were the foundation of the Shire breed whose distinguishing characteristics are size-weight-soundness' on short legs. Three of the early sires that produced important blood-lines were : Honest Tom 1060, Harold 86 and William the Conqueror 2343. An 834 page volume.
