Softcover octavo (VG); all our specials have minimal description to keep listing them viable. They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently they are superior examples. Ordering more than one book will reduce your overall postage costs.

Ex-Boston Athenaeum copy. Full title - AN EXPLICATORY CATECHISM; OR AN EXPLANATION OF THE ASSEMBLY'S SHORTER CATECHISM: WHEREIN ALL THE ANSWERS IN THE ASSEMBLY'S CATECHISM ARE TAKEN ABROAD IN UNDER-QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, THE TRUTHS EXPLAINED, AND PROVED BY REASON AND SCRIPTURE; SEVERAL CASES OF CONSCIENCE RESOLVED; SOME CHIEF CONTROVERSIES IN RELIGION STATED, WITH ARGUMENTS AGAINST DIVERS ERRORS: USEFUL TO BE READ IN PRIVATE FAMILIES, AFTER EXAMINATION IN THE CATECHISM ITSELF; FOR THE MORE CLEAR AND THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IS THEREIN LEARNED. BY THOMAS VINCENT, SOMETIME MINISTER OF MAUDLINE-MILK-STREET, IN LONDON. Collates as [fp], i-vi, 7-265, 1-35, [rp]. Hardcover: H 17.25cm x L 11cm. Contemporary full leather well scuffed; spine lacks its title label with ends chipped; splitting to front and rear joints with front board tenuous but rear board reasonably firm; board corners worn. Speckled text block edges. Toning throughout; missing initial and rear blanks - front pastedown immediately opposite title page and last text page immediately opposite rear pastedown; pastedowns peeled; two Boston Athenaeum red ink stamps (one specifying "Sold | Dec. 1861 | Duplicate") on title page; a few small chips to early and late leaves with antiquarian ink writing at top of title page. Text block remains firm. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing the boards and modestly enhances shelf presence. Thirty-five page section at rear "An Address on the Subjects of Prayer and Family Religion." by North Haven, Connecticut minister Benjamin Trumbull (1735-1820) credited as November 20, 1803. Bibliographical reference: Shaw & Shoemaker "Early American Imprints; Second Series" #9659. English Puritan minister and theologian Thomas Vincent (1634-1678) first published AN EXPLICATORY CATECHISM in 1673 in London with a plethora of British and Scottish editions prior to 1800. This 1805 Northampton, Massachusetts imprint seems to be, per cursory research on OCLC and the LoC and Harvard catalogs, only the American third edition (preceded by Boston editions in 1711 and 1729) and is the first published appearance of Trumbull's essay.
