Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition. Inscribed and signed by author on half-title page ('For Madeline, with best wishes, Lily Tuck'). Edges lightly foxed, otherwise an excellent copy. 2000 Hard Cover. 192 pp. 8vo. "Claire, the young bride of a government contractor, arrives in Bangkok with her husband on March 9, 1967, the day U.S. planes begin bombing runs on North Vietnam. At a dinner party, she meets and befriends Jim Thompson, the real-life American entrepreneur and founder of the Thai Silk Company. Weeks later, on Easter Sunday, Thompson vanishes without a trace in the Thai highlands. As the political implications of Thompson's disappearance surface, Claire becomes increasingly obsessed with his fate. Her quest into what happened, fueled by the longing and loneliness she feels in an exotic land marked by growing unrest, leads to a tragic truth that becomes a metaphor for two cultures in collision. Written in powerful, arresting prose, this taut suspense novel further establishes Lily Tuck as a major voice in literary fiction. Signed by author.

My father ran the Presbyterian Mission hospital --one of only three doctors in the whole peninsula. Mother had gone to Siam in 1903, three years after she graduated from high school, to work in a missionary girls' school. Through the next 31 years and the reigns of five Siamese kings Siam was her home. She married Father in 1910. They had 11 children - I was number six - and Siam was our home." [from the Preface]. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Neatly and legibly inscribed and signed to Faye Dunaway by the author on the first free endpage. The book has sound hinges and does not lean. Pages are clean without marks, creases, stains or wrinkles. The book's crown shows slight dust soiling and fading from light exposure but the rest of the covers are clean. One of the cover corner tips is just barely bumped at the tip, the others are sharp. The shiny copper lettering on the spine is clean and bright. The book's dust jacket is not price-clipped. There is a top to bottom crease in the inside front flap. It is very clean but the jacket's spine is faded from light exposure (the lettering, though, is still bright and readable). There is wear to top and bottom edges of the jacket but no chips or tears longer than a few millimeters. A nice association copy. (Note: Photos may show a flash reflection.) PayPal always welcome.
