Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. LITHGOW, William, 1582-1645? A true and experimentall discourse, upon the beginning, proceeding, and victorious event of this last siege of Breda. With the antiquity and annexing of it, to the house of Nassaw, and the many alterations it hath suffered by armes, and armies, within these threescore yeares. Together with the prudent plots, projects, and policies of warre: the assailants and defendants matchlesse man-hood, in managing martiall a=faires: the misery and manner of souldiers living, their pinching want, and fatall accidents: strange weapons and instruments used by both parties in severall con?@icts. Lastly, their concluded articles, with the circumstances and ordering of the siege and victory. Being pleasant to peruse, and proABtable to observe. Written by him who was an eye witnesse of the siege. William Lithgow.London: Printed by I. Okes for I. Rothwel, and are to be sold at his shop in Pauls Church-yard at the signe of the Sunne, 1637. Small 4to. [8], 55, [lacking last blank]. RARE. . Ref: ESTC S108593, STC 15717. Modern calf binding with gilt dentelles, lightly rubbed. Condition: Some toning and light unobtrusive dampstain to the upper third of some leaves, but generally very good with relatively untrimmed margins. This tract is a superb example of a printed eyewitness battlefield report. Lithgow, a celebrated world traveler, embarked in May 1637 from Scotland, intending to travel to Russia. However, upon realizing the lateness of the seasonhe diverted to the Netherlands, where he witnessed and documented the siege of Breda. His account provides a vivid, detailed narrative of the military strategies and the harsh realities of warfare, reminiscent of a modern war correspondent's report. Lithgow's report not only offers a rare primary source on the siege of Breda, but it also stands as an early example of eyewitness journalism, re,-ecting the evolving role of the printed word in disseminating contemporary news and events. The signi/0cance of this work lies in its contribution to both military history and the history of news reporting, capturing the immediacy and impact of the first hand observation during a pivotal moment in the Eighty Years' War.

Extremely rare (second?) edition of a pamphlet containing an army report on the preparations for a siege of Breda by the army of the Dutch Republic under the Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik. The army had left Nijmegen to march on Breda, which was in the hands of the Spaniards since the conquest of the city by the Spanish general Spinola in June 1625. The hidden motive of these preparations was to distract the Spanish army that was threatening the city of Maastricht, some 150 kilometres southeast of Breda. In 1637, however Frederik Hendrik captured Breda after a seven week's siege. The city remained part of the Dutch Republic from that time. We have located only one other copy, at Brigham Young University in Utah.Fine copy.l Bartolomé Barba Hernández, "El sitio de Breda", in: Revista de historia militar, III (1959), no. 5, pp. 35-54, at p. 54 (no location); François, libraire, Catalogue des livres rares, . de M. Damp staining to margins, scattered spotting. This is the French translation made on the original Latin Hugo (Obsidio Bredana, 1626 ). See Maurice Cockle (110) for the English edition and 817 for several other editions. Cockle acknowledges that this is the best contribution made in the 17th century to the seat of Breda both militarily and politically. The siege of Breda lasted 11 months and cost the lives of 5000 inhabitants of the city. The capitulation of the city on June 2, 1625 was immortalized by the painting of Velasquez "Las Lanzas o The rendition of Breda".

Sir Henry Gage (1597-1645), the translator, received his education in Flanders and subsequently served in the Spanish garrison at Antwerp. He made a name for himself during the 1622 siege of Bergen op Zoom and the 1624 siege of Breda. However, following the fall of Breda and the reduction of English regiments in Spanish service, coupled with the onset of war between England and Spain, Gage was compelled to return to England. He subsequently dedicated his time to studying the theory of war, with this translation being among his most notable scholarly contribution Ghent, being part of the Spanish Netherlands during this period, was under the influence of the Catholic Habsburgs. The Jesuits, like Herman Hugo, were a Catholic order, and their works might have found more support and less censorship in such environments compared to Protestant areas. This Catholic connection might have made Ghent a more sympathetic location for publishing a work by a Jesuit author.

MASTERPIECE BY JACQUES CALLOT "Siège de Breda." Rare map of the siege of the fortified city of Breda and its surroundings during the Dutch Revolt. Etching with engraving in six sheets, made by Jacques Callot, 16241625. Coloured by a later hand. Size: approx. 123 × 140 cm. The scene unfolds in the midst of the Eighty Years' War (the Dutch Revolt, 15681648), in which the northern (Protestant) Dutch Republic rebelled against Spanish Catholic rule. In 1588, the Spanish Armada was defeated with English support, marking a turning point in the conflict. The Republic not only developed a formidable naval power but also, under Prince Maurice, a disciplined and effective army. Both land and naval forces operated under the strong political leadership of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. Maurice subsequently took the offensive, and between 1590 and 1597 a series of towns and fortresses in the northern provincesbeyond Holland, Zeeland, and Frieslandwere gradually captured from Spanish control. The Republic steadily emerged as a power of consequence, leading to the Triple Alliance with France and England in 1596 and its de facto recognition as an independent state. Following the death of Philip II in 1598, sovereignty over the Netherlands passed to his daughter Isabella Clara Eugenia, who became governess of the Spanish Netherlands. Under Isabella, the war continued unabated. After the Republic's setback at the Battle of Nieuwpoort (1600) and its naval victory at Gibraltar (1607), a truce was concluded in 1609the Twelve Years' Truce. Though not a formal peace, it effectively acknowledged the Republic's independence. When hostilities resumed after the truce, Spain renewed its efforts to subdue the Republic with some initial success. The Dutch position had weakened due to internal conflicts and the execution of Oldenbarnevelt in 1619, while Maurice himself was no longer in his prime. The Republic adopted a defensive stance, and in 1624 the siege of Breda began. On 21 July 1624, Ambrogio Spinola departed Brussels for Turnhout, where an army of 18,000 men awaited him. The occupation of Ginneken on 27 August marked the effective start of the siege. The defence of Breda was led by Justinus van Nassau. At the time, the city contained 6,309 civilianscitizens, inhabitants, and farmerswhile the garrison, including soldiers' wives and children, numbered 6,802 persons. Breda was a strong fortress city, strategically controlling the routes to Utrecht and Amsterdam. The eleven-month siege captivated all of Europe. Contemporary news pamphlets reported weekly developments, and princes and nobles visited the site. Two days after the city's surrender on 5 June 1625, Isabella herself came to witness the aftermath. This spectacle forms the subject of the present print, in which Isabella, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, is prominently depicted at the lower centre. Isabella commissioned the French artist Jacques Callot (15921635) to produce this masterpiece. The composition not only illustrates Spanish military ingenuity in the capture of the city, but also served to justify the enormous expenditure of money and human lives required for the campaign. Callot has included himself in the lower left of the map; beside him stands Gian Francesco Cantagallina, holding a pair of dividers. During the siege, Cantagallina served as Spinola's engineer and designer of the siege works. Using his data, Callot constructed the map. He himself was not present during the siege, only visiting Breda after the surrender in October 1625, and subsequently integrated the principal events into a carefully composed narrative landscape. Price: Euro 6.500,-.

HUGO (HERMAN, SJ) THE SIEGE OF BREDA written in Latin. translated into English by C[aptain] H[enry] G [age], FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH [Gent, J. Dooms], 1627. Small Folio 32 cm., 3 preliminary leaves, 152 pages. (lacking portrait) 15 plates (6 double; including map, plans) . VERY RARE IN COMMERCE. [STC 13926]. Contemporary calf, some wear to spine, small loss at top and hinges starting Particularly interesting as a rare English work priunted in Ghent and also notable for the unusual Chronogram in the colophon Sir Henry Gage (1597-1645), the translator, received his education in Flanders and subsequently served in the Spanish garrison at Antwerp.
