Part 1 - St. Elmo"."The island of Malta is key to the control of the central Mediterranean Sea. For five months in 1561 a Turkish force attacked Malta - and was defied, in a great epic of endurance, by the Knights of St. John. Sir Walter Scott visited the island a year before his death, and gathered material to write a novel about it, dying before it was complete. Now S. Fowler Wright has finished Scott's last great historical romance. This is a story of high courage and deep faith. At its centre stands the old Grand Master of the Order, La Vallette (after whom Valetta was named), grim and unshakeable. But it is also a story of love undaunted amid fearful perils; of a girl who, rather than be separated from the man she loves, learns to wield a sword, and, escaping by a hairsbreadth from the clutches of the infidel, finally wins even the Grand Master's grudging admiration. Here is a novel to stir the blood and stimulate the imagination." (Text taken from Goodreads.) This 1942 first edition copy is in Good condition overall. The (unclipped) dust jacket (Fair) is clean, with numerous small open tears to the top and lower edges (see photos). The blue, cloth-covered boards are in good condition with some light bumping to edges, corners, and to spine head and tail. Internally, the pages are clean with no noted marks or annotations (other than a previous owner's name in pen on the inside front cover). The binding remains good, and the block is clean.

Add to basketCloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. None (illustrator). A fine example of S. Fowler Wright's historical novel, based on the unfinished romance novel by Sir Walter Scott. A reprinted edition. Bound in the publisher's cloth with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Originally published in 1942, 'The Siege of Malta' is a completion of Sir Walter Scott's unfinished romance novel surrounding the five-month long siege of Malta in 1561. Scott visited the island to gather material for his novel, becoming particularly fascinated with the epic endurance of the Knights of St John. Unfortunately, Scott died before the novel was completed, although it was later picked up by British editor and author, Sydney Fowler Wright. Bound in the publisher's cloth with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, lovely. Dust wrapper is also excellent, with minor shelf wear and the odd mark. Internally, firmly bound with very bright and clean pages. Fine. book.
