Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. First Edition. 348 Pages Indexed. There are seven inked lines of gift inscription signed by the author 12-12-05 on the half-title page. No other marks of any sort. Interior text pages are near flawless. When World War II began, New Mexico had a population of 531,815 inhabitants, one of the least populated of the 48 states. Yet, New Mexico and New Mexicans played a key role in the outcome of the War in the Pacific. The New Mexico National Guard was the first U.S. military unit to fight the Japanese, holding on for four months on Bataan, and then suffering through years in POW camps. The atomic bomb was developed at a secret laboratory in Los Alamos, and tested at a site near Alamogordo. Navajo code talkers helped capture bases from which B-29s bombed Japanese cities. Finally, several thousand Japanese Americans, classified by the FBI as dangerous enemy aliens, were interned in a camp near Santa Fe. These seemingly separate events were related through unique qualities of the arid, spacious land. The authors have now provided a voice for the previously silent heroes of these wartime events: Special Engineer Detachment (SED) enlisted men and women at Los Alamos who actually fabricated the atomic bomb, Navajo Marine privates, National Guard enlisted men, and Japanese American internees. Their stories, obtained through personal interviews by Rogers and Bartlit to supplement the historical record, illuminate the patriotism, human suffering, and courageous humor in these important World War II events. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine condition. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine dust jacket. NOT a library discard (illustrator). First Edition. St. Paul, Minnesota: Zenith Press, 2005. INSCRIBED / SIGNED by Kenneth C. Ruiz (Captain USN Ret.) directly on the front free endpaper. SIGNED copies are SCARCE. Fine condition in a bright and shiny Fine dust jacket (only a tiny bit of very mild shelfwear to the jacket). NO chips, tears, creases or fading. Square and tight. Sharp corners. NOT a library discard. NOT a remainder. Illustrated with several maps and 8 pages of b/w photos. Bound in the original gilt-stamped blue boards. Complete with dust jacket. From the publisher: "A coin flip likely saved the life of Kenneth C. Ruiz. It was August 1942 and he was fresh out of the U.S. Naval Academy. He and a classmate flipped a coin to see who would stand watch on the bridge of their heavy cruiser, the USS Vincennes, off Savo Island as the Marines were landing on Guadalcanal. Ruiz was on the bridge when the ship took a direct hit and sank. He ended up in the Pacific without a life jacket, but his classmate and the entire radio room crew perished in the attack. "The luck of the draw" is a recurring theme in this powerful memoir. Following the demise of the Vincennes, Ruiz volunteered to serve on submarines for the balance of the war and had numerous harrowing experiences. He spent most of his time on the USS Pollack, which was sub-standard in terms of technology, but was still deadly and made a significant impact on Japanese shipping in the far reaches of the Pacific. A worthy addition to the litany of WWII books on submariners, The Luck of the Draw is filled with heartbreaking stories of how the smallest decisions made the difference between life and death for soldiers and sailors in the war.". INSCRIBED / SIGNED by the AUTHOR. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine condition/Fine dust jacket. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 8vo. 304pp. + 8 plates. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. * Inscribed and SIGNED by author on paste-in plate on title page. * First printing (number line contains "1"). * Book cover like new, very light edge wear - pages clean, bright and unmarked spine like new. * Jacket like new, slight shelf wear. * Proceeds benefit Friends of the Library. * "Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care." The pilots were known as "suicide jockeys" and the aircraft they flew were called "flak bait." Attached to hemp or nylon ropes and towed aloft by modified bombers or transport aircraft, Allied combat gliders were used in some of the riskiest missions of World War II: both day and night landings miles behind enemy lines carrying specially trained assault forces. In Silent Wings at War, John L. Lowden combines his own recollections with those of thirty-nine fellow veterans to create a vivid, gritty, jocose memoir of war as he and they lived it. Lowden recalls that casualty rates ranged from 60 percent in Sicily to 25 percent in the Rhine River crossing. In some operations, men were thrown into battle with the hope that enough would survive to accomplish the objective. Before a nighttime resupply of antitank artillery to Normandy, it was anticipated that 50 percent of the men and equipment would not be able-bodied or usable after the landings. Silent Wings at War records a lesser-known chapter of World War II history, distinguishing true tales of courage and humor from a long line of fiction about wartime. Covering training and strategy, as well as German, British, and American glider design, Lowden focuses on seven major Allied operations: from Sicily to Bastogne to the final Rhine River crossing, and British commando raids in the China-Burma-India Theater. I'm grateful for this book." -- Chuck Colson. "This story needed to be told in this way. A "must read." -- J.I. Packer. "Powerful book . read it, learn from it, and take a stand." -- from the Foreword by Rick Warren. "An engaging account of renewal in one of Christendom's great communions." -- Mark Galli, Senior Managing Editor, Christianity Today. " "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32). With two specific qualities -- a gift for expository preaching and a passion for evangelizing lost souls for Christ, Bishop Thaddeus Rockwell Barnum has been appointed by God to tell the unique story of the Third World missionaries' battle for the soul of the American church. As a gifted expository preacher, Bishop Barnum took great care to measure every story of the movement against the truth as revealed in the Bible. Thus he weaved through the webs of documents and events to give us the true picture behind the war of propaganda and publicity. With the passin of an evangelist, Bishop Barnum fixes his eyes on Jesus as he tells the real story of the power of the gospel to convict hearts and convert souls. In the midst of the crisis of faith and the collapse of spiritual leadership in the church today, Bishop Barnum sees that this is the only way to save the church in America. Through personal experience of two servants of God from Rwanda, Bishop John Rucyahana and Archbishop Emmanuel Kolini, the horror of the genocide in Rwanda is linked clearly to the spiritual genocide in America. How could anyone keep silent when the souls of our people are being ushered into hell for eternal death? My prayer for everyone who reads this book is that you too "will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." -- Yong Ping Chung, Retired Primate, Southeast Asia, from the inner front jacket flap. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Thaddeus Rockwell Barnum served many years as an Episcopal priest. He was part of a wider circle of clergy who requested Anglican leaders in African and Asia to come to America and confront the tyranny of heresy in the Episcopal CHurch. His firsthand reporting became the material for this book. On June 24, 2001, Barnum was consecrated a bishop by the Anglican Church of Rwanda. He serves in their US work called Anglican Mission in America as bishop and church planter. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Yale/Berkeley Divinity School and has authored two other books: Remember Eve and Where is God in Suffering and Tragedy. He and his wife, Erilynne, live and minister in Connecticut. - from the inner rear jacket flap. Signed by Author(s).
