Condition: VERY GOOD. Early printing. Wright's first novel, set in 18th-century London, is a fantasy/ghost story about an aristocratic woman and the spirit of her African slave, killed while still a child during a storm, given a lavish funeral, but who, over the years, appears to the woman's descendants as a "banshee" bringing a warning of death within 3 days. Illustrated by Rex Whistler with a frontispiece and 4 full page drawings at the beginning of each section. Fantasy title missed by Bleiler of an aristocratic woman whose African slave returns after his death to haunt the woman's descendants. Kirkus Reviews commented that this is a book that some will find "rather charming and different. The story behind a portrait of a lady of fashion in 18th century London, and the mysterious little black boy at her knee" wearing a silver collar engraved "My name is Pompey, to Belliza, I am slave." An association copy warmly INSCRIBED by Wright to Manhattan architect, Percy W. Darbyshire "in long friendship and with gratitude for encouragement, understanding." Although Wright went on to write one other historical novels and several well-received biographies, books signed by her are very scarce. 150 pp. Very good in a good dust jacket (some wear to the edges of the boards, several small chips and other edgewear to the dj) .
