Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Betty Campbell Sos (illustrator). 1st Edition. SIGNED ON THE TITLE PAGE BENEATH THE AUTHOR'S PRINTED NAME as follows: To Jill | Lucy Levering Stark." Beneath the illustration on p.27 entitled "Skippy back with two fawns.Mrs. Curry finds them, there is the signature as follows: '"Mama" Ruth Curry Burns." 8vo. [8]9-46[2]p. Illustrated with black and white full-page drawings by Betty Campbell Sos. Large photo of the author on the rear panel of the dust jacket. Green Paper over boards with black letters on the spine. Just hints of wear to the extremities, covers clean and bright, all illustrations present and in fine condition, paper turning as usual with this inexpensive stock, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. Dust jacket has a small chip missing near the bottom of the front cover, else near fine to fine, and not price-clipped. Per the page opposite the title page, "This story was compiled and written under the direction of Lucy levering Stark with the collaboration of the following children: Bob Bentley, Beverly Adams, Peggy Bentley, John Curry, Jeanette Curry,Betty Miller, Valetta Miller, Joan Campbell, and Carol Lynn Dressen." Nine children and their teacher collaborated on this delightful true story of a pet deer, Skippy a most unusual deer who had a taste for garden roses dash and the courage to fight off a mountain lion. Skippy was a character much talked about in the one-room school at Camp Baldy, in the San Antonio (California) Canyon. Everybody knew something about her, especially the Curry children, who had adopted her when she was a frightened, helpless orphaned fawn. Actually Queenie the Curry dog discovered the fawn and brought her home and from then on Skippy's exploits were a matter of interest to all the children around. To record Skippy's doings, the children in the one-room school and their teacher organized their editorial activities -- they were already publishing a semi-monthly newspaper, The Baldy Breeze -- into book material form. Everyone took part, for everyone knew something different about Skippy and her family. The result is a uniquely appealing story, simply and charmingly told. Skippy is illustrated by Betty Sos, an older sister of one of the children -- now all grown up -- who also knew Skippy personally." [from the dust jacket] " Born in Los Angeles, Lucy Levering Stark was brought up in Redlands and taught in that area as a teacher and then a principal of a larger city school. She was active in the Redlands branch of the American Association of University Women; in the Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society; and in alumni, retired teachers, church and community organizations; and was Vice President of the San Bernardino County Historical Society. An alumna of the University of Redlands, the University of Southern California, the College of Oratory, and the Hollywood Community School of the Theater, she has written for educational publications." [from the rear panel of the dust jacket] The Currys mentioned in this description were members of the family that ran Camp Curry on Mount Baldy. An extraordinary item related to Camp Curry and Mt. Baldy, CA. It is not absolutely clear whose hand is in the signature of Ruth Curry Burns; it may be that of the author neither possibility has been ascertained with certainty. Signed by Author(s).

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. INSCRIPTION FROM GORDON ARNOLD on title page; Clean, tight, unmarked; spine straight and uncreased; very minimal wear; Skippy Jessiman is a 14-year-old farm boy with an obsession for baseball, a powerful pitching arm and a conviction there is more to see in the world than the rump of his old plough horse Charlie. In the winter of 1919, Skippy's best friend Jordi Duncan and other veterans of the Great War return to Teal Marsh, a small prairie community, bringing with them the deadly Spanish flu. After the Spanish flue kills his girlfriend, Skippy puts his baseball dreams on hold as he offers to help the village doctor fight the flu any way he can. Skippy's War weaves together the hopes, dreams and prejudices of the prairie pioneers as the community bands together in a time when surviving a major illness was as much a matter of good luck as good medicine. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 665 pages. Published in 2010. The author's breakthrough second novel. One of the best novels of and for our time. The true First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, including the single-volume edition that was originally intended for the British Export Market only. Published in a small and limited first print run as a slipcased three-volume softcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. The book is ingeniously conceived and produced as such, mimicking children's and young adult's serialized novels, in keeping with its subject. Presents, in its true First Edition format, Paul Murray's "Skippy Dies". With each consecutive volume individually subtitled: Volume One, "Hopeland"; Volume Two, "Heartland"; and Volume Three, "Ghostland And Afterland". Murray daringly abolishes conventional suspense starting with his very title. Now, death is NOT a suitable subject for teenagers, much less grownups, these days. But here it is, Paul Murray's challenge to established narrative formulas - not just in books, but in ALL other media, especially film - whose underlying "message" is, and will always be: "The Hero Never Dies". Instead: "Why does Skippy, a fourteen-year-old boy at Dublin's venerable Seabrook College, end up dead on the floor of the local doughnut shop? Could it have something to do with his friend Ruprecht Van Doren, an overweight genius who is determined to open a portal into a parallel universe using ten-dimensional string theory? Could it involve Carl, the teenage drug dealer and borderline psychotic, who is Skippy's rival in love? Why Skippy dies and what happens next is the subject of this dazzling and uproarious novel. A heartfelt, hilarious portrait of the pain, joy, and occasional beauty of adolescence, and a tragic depiction of a world always happy to sacrifice its weakest members" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Paul Murray collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page of Volume One by Paul Murray. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed copies of the Slipcased First Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Precedes and should NOT be confused with the single-volume edition. A rare signed copy thus. Longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2010 for "Skippy Dies". One of the most brilliant writers of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 0241141826. Signed by Author.

Personally hand signed by Paul Murray directly to the full title page. NOT inscribed to anyone. NOT a tip in. NOT a bookplate. From the author of THE BEE STING, a New York Times Top 10 Best Books of the Year and shortlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize. The bestselling and critically acclaimed novel from Paul Murray, Skippy Dies, shortlisted for the 2010 Costa Book Awards, longlisted for the 2010 Booker Prize, and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Why does Skippy, a fourteen-year-old boy at Dublin's venerable Seabrook College, end up dead on the floor of the local doughnut shop? Could it have something to do with his friend Ruprecht Van Doren, an overweight genius who is determined to open a portal into a parallel universe using ten-dimensional string theory? Could it involve Carl, the teenage drug dealer and borderline psychotic who is Skippy's rival in love? Or could "the Automator"the ruthless, smooth-talking headmaster intent on modernizing the school have something to hide? Why Skippy dies and what happens next is the subject of this dazzling and uproarious novel, unraveling a mystery that links the boys of Seabrook College to their parents and teachers in ways nobody could have imagined. With a cast of characters that ranges from hip-hop-loving fourteen-year-old Eoin "MC Sexecutioner" Flynn to basketball playing midget Philip Kilfether, packed with questions and answers on everything from Ritalin, to M-theory, to bungee jumping, to the hidden meaning of the poetry of Robert Frost, Skippy Dies is a heartfelt, hilarious portrait of the pain, joy, and occasional beauty of adolescence, and a tragic depiction of a world always happy to sacrifice its weakest members. As the twenty-first century enters its teenage years, this is a breathtaking novel from a young writer who will come to define his generation. Signed by Author(s).
