Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Photography by Cervin Robinson (illustrator). 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). Once listed, this will be the Only copy signed by the author Rosemary Haag Bletter. Just as significantly, it is signed and inscribed to Lewis Mumford, the American historian and sociologist, particularly noted for his study of cities and urban architecture. I purchased this book some years ago from an individual who had earlier purchased a number of books from the estate of Lewis Mumford. This will be the fourth of his books that I've listed. The three others have already sold. One was a book by Frank Lloyd Wright. Mumford and Wright had been good friends. If you google the two names together it will bring up a book titled Frank Lloyd Wright and Lewis Mumford: Thirty Years of Correspondence, also a paper titled Mumford and Wright: The Power of the Critic. The inscription in this book reads: 'For Lewis Mumford and village strawberry festivals. Rosemarie Haag Bletter.' You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They're very clean. There's some color fade off the top and bottom edges of the spine, also off the top and bottom edges just adjacent to the spine on the front and rear. The edges and corners are in very good shape. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages look very clean. I'm not finding any soiling. I'm not seeing any corner or placeholder creases. There's some crinkling off the juncture of an early page. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. Both inside covers and their endpapers form a light green map of New York City with little numbered squares indicating the location of skyscraper landmarks referenced in the book. There's a very small, neat signature of a D. Lindroth off the edge of both the front and rear inside covers. It makes me think he has something to do with the mapped drawings, but it could also be the signature of the person I purchased the book from. You can easily miss seeing it. That and the author's signature represent the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. As you would expect, there are great many photographs throughout by Cervin Robinson. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. The book was in a fitted protective cover when I purchased it. I just removed it to get a better look at the jacket and will replace it with a new cover after taking the photos. The jacket is in very good shape, no tears, no chips, not much wrong to call out. The flaps look very good as well, very clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. From the dust jacket: Ada Louise Huxtable is quoted "Don't sell Art Deco short. It produced some of the most notable monuments of a uniquely American contribution to architectural history, the skyscraper." This book will prove invaluable to the historian of art and architecture, and perhaps most of all it will be treasured by the city dweller who loves his city.' 'Rosemarie Haag Bletter an American architectural historian, university professor, writer, and lecturer. She has taught at Yale, Columbia, the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and CUNY Graduate Center. She supervised twenty-five doctoral dissertations, among them those of the scholars Barry Bergdoll, Larry Busbea, and Gabrielle Esperdy. An expert on twentieth-century European and American architecture, she was instrumental in the favorable reappraisal of Art Deco building design during the 1970s, is particularly known for her seminal writings on German Expressionist and Early Modernist architecture, as well as for her cultural analysis of the architecture of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, and as an early exponent in academia of Frank Gehry's work. Bletter was an organizer of the 1975 Brooklyn Museum exhibition "Skyscraper Style" that was based on her book of the same name, one of the first serious studies to validate American Art Deco commercial architecture.'.
