Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine condition. No jacket. First US edition & possibly 1st overall. New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1895. Uncommonly nice copy. Condition would be FINE but for a touch of rubbing to the edges. Clean, square, tight, & unmarked. Sharp corners. Previous owner's name. Very attractive book by the author of LORNA DOONE. First US edition and according to bibliographer Robert Lee Wolff it is "quite possibly the first." Contains four stories: Slain by the Doones; Frida or, The Lover's Leap; George Bowring; Crocker's Hole. These same stories were published in London under the title, Tales from the Telling House (1896, Sampson Low). Beautiful cover design (artist unidentified), in brown and black motted cloth, blocked in green, gold, and black. The front cover features a sword, gun, and club tied together, surrounded by a profusion of green oak leaves and scrolls that say in Gothic type, "If any man asketh who killed thee, say 'twas the Doones of Badgery." On the spine, the words "The Doones of Badgery" appear with similar scrolls. Wolff says this US edition's sheets are same as the English, but with narrower margins and bound in an American case. Original decorated cloth Top edge gilt. Pictorial title, printed in red and black, inserted. Gilt lettering and designs on spine and cover are still remarkably bright and fresh. Wolff 542b. See also Sadleir 233. . First US edition & possibly 1st overall. Hardcover. Near Fine condition/No jacket. 244pp.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Unusual brown boards textured in a bark pattern, olive green oak leaf decoration overlaid with darker green ribbons stamped in gilt with the quotation: Say 'twas of any man the Doones asketh who otBadgery killed thee" which form a border around gold-stamped armaments. Front panel and spine titles also in gold over similar decoration. Interior still clean and tightly bound, deckle-cut edges on fine paper, top-edge gilt, elegant illustration on title page. Only flaw being that the original, and only, glue of the pastedowns now shows thru at the endpapers, spine shows only very light rubbing at ends and there is a small production crease in the board cloth at the top front panel. Very attractive and scarce book by the author of "Lorna Doone.".
