SIGNED AND INSCRIBED ON FFEP BY MORRIS WEST AND DON MARIO BORRELLI 'to Harold Jameson with thanks and compliments Morris L. West' and Don Borrelli has written a an inscription in Italian (sorry my Italian isn't good enough to translate) and signed it with 'Don' and a monogram. Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of jacket and spine, spine and extremities of largely yellow jacket extensively browned, corners rubbed with small loss. Not price clipped (16s), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 216pp. Father Mario Borrelli (1922-2007), was a Neapolitan priest, sociologist and educationist. In the 1950s he established an international network for social support, called 'The House of the Urchins', aimed at the recovery from the streets and professional training of the street urchins of Naples. Subsequently, following his leaving the priesthood, he maintained his international reputation for his civil commitment and his studies on peace research and education. Australian novelist Morris West (1916-99), wrote this book on Borrelli's work to raise funds from Australian and American donors. Harold Jameson may have been one of those who donated. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [an ex-library, but nice-looking with only minor handling wear, and with some interesting annotations on the rear pastedown (see Notes for details)]. (B&W photographic plates) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep: "Faithfully yours / Jacob A. Riis." An account of the author's anti-slum crusade during the decade following the publication of his most famous work, "How the Other Half Lives." By 1900, this Danish-American social reformer, photographer and muckraking journalist was nationally famous, and in demand as a speaker -- which is amply documented by the various markings in this copy, which was (inexplicably) withdrawn from the collection of the Nebraska State Historical Society and is stamped as such on the title page and the rear pastedown. Also on the rear pastedown, the original librarian's (I assume) annotation provides both authentication of the signature and provenance of the book: "Bot [bought] of HW Brown: $1.10 Pd 2-24-1903 Sig. of author same date + heard author lecture at Oliver Theater on 'Tony's Hardships.'" (An additional ownership signature, that of a Mr. and Mrs. Williams of Lincoln, Nebraska, appears on a second front endpaper, also dated 2-24-1903.) The referenced lecture, in all its particulars, is confirmed by an account in the Nebraska State Journal of February 25, 1903, with the reporter commenting that "the unconscious naturalness of [Riis's] pose and gestures, the sincerity of the man and the fact that his words were the outcome of years of keen personal observation and experience, all combined to make the lecture one of exceptional interest, [with] the unusual charm of being seemingly a spontaneous talk with an audience with whom the speaker was in full confidence and sympathy." (And, incredibly, some idiot librarian chose to deaccession this book. Well, that's Nebraska for you. And I'm from there, so I can say that.) ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." You can access this catalog and its contents in any one of three ways: (1) email us to request a PDF to be emailed to you; (2) view or download the catalog from the link on our website's main page; (3) browse the books individually (including a few that didn't make the cut for the catalog) on our website under these two subject headings: "Immigration: Fiction" and "Immigration: Non-Fiction." Hardcover. First Edition. Second Printing, in publisher's original decorated blue cloth. Illustrated. This copy is SIGNED "with the best wishes of/Theodore Roosevelt/Dec 1906." Jacob Riis, a significant contributor to the cause of urban reform in the United States of America at the turn of the twentieth century, was among the most dedicated advocates for America's oppressed and downtrodden. He arrived in New York from his native Denmark at the age of 21 in 1870. A pioneer in photojournalism, Riis photographed and wrote about the slums and tenements of a New York in the dawn of a new century. Riis came to Roosevelt's attention through his 1890 book HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES. As Commissioner of the New York City Police Department, Roosevelt accompanied Riis on his evening travels through the slums and witnessed firsthand the inhumane conditions endured by many of New York's inhabitants. In his 1901 book MAKING OF AN AMERICAN, Riis wrote of Roosevelt: "It could not have been long after I wrote HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES that he came to the Evening Sun office one day looking for me. I was out and he left his card merely writing on the back of it that he had read my book and had 'come to help.' That was all, and it tells the whole story of the man. I loved him from the day I first saw him; nor ever in all the years that have passed has he failed of the promise made then. No one ever helped as he did. For two years, we were brothers on Mulberry Street." Roosevelt, in turn, wrote of Riis after his death: "It is difficult for me to write of Jacob Riis only from the public standpoint. He was one of my truest and closest friends. I have ever prized the fact that once, in speaking of me, he said, 'since I met him he has been my brother.' I have not only admired and respected him beyond measure, but I have loved him dearly . and I mourn him as if he were one of my own family." Minor wear to covers. Near Fine.
