The "smooth preaching" of the title refers to flattering or soft preaching that supplies excuses and apologies for sinful behavior, rather than the strict and judgmental preaching that Walker favors. This was a popular enough lecture to get three printings within the year. Walker was "the pre-eminent expounder of the metaphysics of early nineteenth-century Unitarianism, of a common-sense realism combined with a simple piety and a lofty ethical tone" (DAB).
