Condition: Good. - An 8 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide page from a program for the December 15, 1921 performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Bruno Walter. The page is signed by the 5 singers: Lotte Leonard, Mme. Charles Cahier, Karl Erb, Hans Duhan, and Franz Markhoff. Folded horizontally with tiny tears or chips to the left and right edges and creases to the corners. This fragile program leaf printed on highly acidic paper is darkened, but has since been professionally de-acidified. The German Soprano Lotte Leonard (1884-1976) [aka Charlotte Levy] emigrated to America during World War Two. She was the Soprano soloist in Handel's "Israel in Egypt" at La Scala in 1928 and soloist in Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis" at Salzburg in 1931.The American-born contralto Sandra Cahier (known as Madame Charles Cahier) (1870-1951) was associated with Malher and sang in the premiere of "Das Lied Von der Erde" in 1911. She sang at the MET from 1912 through 1914 and taught at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Among her students was Marian Anderson. She advised Lauritz Melchior to change from a baritone to a heldentenor. The German tenor Karl Erb (1877-1958) was considered by many to be the ideal Evangelist in Bach's "St. Matthew Passion".The Austrian baritone Hans Duhan (1890-1971) sang in 3 important premieres: "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss, as Harlequin; in "Jonny Plays On" by Ernest Krenek, as Daniello; and in "Giuditta" by Franz Lehar as The Duke. He sang several times at the Salzburg Festival from 1922 until 1937, and was the first Pagageno there. The Austrian bass Franz Markhoff (1880-1964) performed at Salzburg under Richard Strauss (1922-1930).
