A Sherlock Holmes adventure staged in Europe of 1891. 40-Week Bestseller & adapted to film in 1976 w/the same title. Ingeniously published as a "lost manuscript" of the late Dr. John H. Watson. The Introduction tells us Holmes did not die along with Prof. James Moriarity as we were all told in The Final Problem, That book was frabricated to allow privacy while Holmes' was in therapt with Sigmund Freud for cocaine addition (self-injected with a 7% -solution). Treatment's success allowed Holmes to thwart a European war while unravelling a sinister kidnapping plot. In a final hypnotic therapeutic session, Freud learns of Holmes' supressed childhood memories of his father committing suicide after killing his mother for adultery --- the lover being none other than Moriarty! Freud shares the revalation wtih Watson; both elected not to tell Holmes. Had they chose otherwise, given drug addiction cured, might revelation have robbed Holmes of his zealous dedication to fighting wrongs and pursuing justice? 237 pgs, 17 chapters in 2 parts: I, The Problem; II, The Solution. Dutton & Co Inc. in 1974. The green boards have very slight staining along the bottom edge of the rear panel but are otherwise unmarked. Page edges are browned - a little unevenly due to the different paper stock used. Endpapers are slightly browned with some light grubby marks to the front free endpaper and damp staining along the very bottom edges of the rear endpapers. The pages are a little browned with a slight musty smell but are otherwise unmarked. Jacket has a half inch closed tears at either side of the bottom of the front panel with a small tear to the surface next to the spine a little surface damage to the top edge. The rear panel and the spine have some browning and there is a three inch crease to the front flap. Jacket illustration by David K. Stone. First printing.
