Mayer. unpaginated. paperback. 251. keywords: Europe England Literature Poetry Women World Literature. DESCRIPTION - 'If thou must love me, let it be for nought / Except for love's sake only. .' Elizabeth Barrett was a pretty, young invalid when she met and fell in love with a man who was destined to become the leading poet of Victoria's reign. When Robert Browning carried her away to the Casa Guido in Italy, she was to remember the time he called her his Pretty little Portuguese. After she fashioned these exquisite love poems, she called them the ' 'Sonnets from the Portuguese, and needless to say, they were dedicated to her husband. The world has long since acclaimed these sonnets as among the finest ever written. They bear simple and eloquent testimony to a great love whose spell has enchanted all those who have read them. inventory #48115.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. BROWNING SONNETS FROM THE PORTUGUESE ILLUSTRATIONS BY WILLY POGANY 1950. This book is missing the dust jacket, the slipcase (not sure if it had one?) and has some sunning to the front cover and some minor soiling as well and I was tempted not to list it. Then I opened it to look at the Willy Pogany illustrations, and wow, I see why people really enjoy his art. This book was also a prize book at a school graduation which I also found surprising because some of the plates are a bit risqué (especially for a commencement at St. John s in 1960! as marked on the front endpaper). So I have decided to list it, at a very reasonable price and let someone else enjoy it. For your consideration then, I am pleased to be able to offer: Sonnets from the Portuguese, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, with illustrations by Willy Pogany. It was published by the Thomas Y. Crowell Company of New York, dated 1950 and a sixth printing (so stated). The book is bound in burnt orange cloth covers with gilt titles and decorations on cover and spine. All eight color plates are present, in near fine condition and blank on the reverse. I believe the Frontispiece has been reglued in place. There are many other b&w illustrations by Pogany in the book. Condition: This book is in good condition. The covers, particularly the front cover, show quite a bit of sunning and a small speck or two of soiling. The gilt titles on the spine are faded. There are also some small pencil lines on both covers. Inside, there is a prize book presentation note, as mentioned, on the front endpaper. There are also some spots of light soiling inside, none of which affects the actual images of the plates. The hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
