Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Mike Machat (illustrator). 1st Edition. We are coming up on the 100th anniversary of the end of what is now known as World War I, the first world-wide industrial war. There have been great works written about the war and its participants (Babara Tuchman's "The Guns of August", Erich Maria Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front" come immediately to mind.) This 7 volume set is something completely different. Compiled and printed by an organization called The National Alumni(which appears to associated with the American Legion), the set was published in 1923 and sold by subscription only and registered to specific individuals only. This set was a gift to a woman named Margaret Jane Davis from her father Robert K. Davis. The material in the books is drawn from original correspondence, letters, transcripts, meeting notes and other sources and covers all of the sides of the conflict. A friend who is a bit of historian says that they are generally considered to be very accurate if somewhat slanted towards the Allied side of the conflicting parties. The seven volumes cover the period of 1913-1919 with each volume covering one year. Each volume is about 400 pages and all are in spectacular condition internally with some pages being uncut. The leather bound, highly illustrated covers vary from near fine to fair with the spines in particular suffering from the damage associate with the passage of time. The spine on Volume One is mostly missing and the from board is loose. Volumes 2. 5 and 6 have loose spine covers with volume 5 missing some material on the facing edge. I would grade Volume One and 5 as in fair condition on the outside, Volume 2 and 6 as good. Volumes 3, 4 and 7 are Very Good to near Fine. All volumes are Fine+ internally with no damage or markings. AbeBooks limits me to 5 photos on the listing. If you want any others, let me know.
