Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Good. Recently inspected by Barry Taylor, Head of Hispanic Studies at the British Library, February 2025. Translated from Spanish by Drachma Translations, specialist translators and numismatic experts, Toledo, Spain. In 1760 Bourbon Spain, was under the rule of Carlos III, King of Spain, during the suppression of the Jesuits, the prelude to the Seven Year s War and the creation of the Prado Museum. This lot is a wax sealed itemised receipt of payment dated (Wednesday) May 21st 1760 for the artisan carpentry services of Madrid Master Carpenter, Joseph Luis de los Santos, penned in his own hand recto and verso with ornate old Spanish cursive handwriting, itemising his charges on the verso for the creation of a Taffeta and artisan ironwork adorned white funeral coffin, possibly attributed to the illegitimate child of a monarch or noble, commonplace throughout Spanish history, and documented as Josepha Vizenta Colón, may she rest in glory, for the sum of 352 Reales de Vellón. In the 1775 census a carpenter in Madrid was reported to earn 6 Reales per day, approximately 15 Reales de Vellón. So in 1760 this invoice for 352 Reales de Vellón is equivalent to around a month s labour, hence this coffin was an objet de arte, reminiscent of the final years of Baroque opulence. The 265-year-old vellum was wax sealed. The sealed end of the vellum has been damaged during unsealing. Investigation from numismatic experts confirmed the author of the receipt Joseph Luis de los Santos used financial symbols consistent with the currency Reales de Vellón. King Joseph I had first ordered this currency minting in the Iberian Peninsula. The vellum contains an extremely unusual (and undocumented) wire filigree watermark featuring a church orb surmounted by a crown, symbols suggesting that Madrid Master Carpenter Joseph Luis de los Santos was in the commission of the Spanish monarchy and church. In eighteenth century Madrid death was ever present. Because life was uncertain and its passing was fraught with dangers, Christians were always preparing for the eternal afterlife. A good death was the goal, and those who were seriously ill preferred a good confessor over a good physician, because after confession, as death occurred, the soul would be judged. This explained the preference for burial in churches, where daily communion was celebrated and, during the time of Carlos III (reign 1759-1788) prayers for the souls of purgatory were one of the most popular devotions. Neither the granting by the Pope of a plenary indulgence for the altars of chapels in the cemeteries nor the pastoral by Cardinal Lorenzana (1722-1804), the first ecclesiastical authority in Spain, that those buried in cemeteries would also be resurrected in the final judgement had little effect on the population. In 1802 Rafael Amat de Cortada y Sentjust (1746-1819), the fifth Baron de Maldà and a Catalan writer, penned on behalf of the great conservative mass, complaining about the abandonment of the dead, exiled in cemeteries, and pointed to the irreligion of the times and the secularisation of ideas, which, together, with the disappearance of graves, blurred the very concept of death. Conservative arguments included political claims, indeed xenophobic, that the ideas of the French philosophers had led to the revolutionary catastrophe and had brought about the changed in funeral customs. In a class society, as was eighteenth century Spain, social recognition was of great value, such that burial acquired paramount importance. Inside churches and convents the faithful could see the pantheons of local notables. The information engraved on the stones could be appreciated by all and testified to family continuity. Burial in church was now accessible to the new rich, who while not reaching the rank of the founders and members of Madrid s leading families could pay for access to eternal life as well as social prominence. Please contact me for a copy of the official translation. Signed by Author(s).
