The list of assumed words includes 193 words taken from the Core Vocabulary, a word list based on extensive study of reading materials for the first half of grade one. The Core Vocabulary contains only words that are likely to be known to children who have had beginning experience in reading. In addition to the assumed words, 186 new words have been introduced gradually. No more than three new words appear on any page, and every new word is used a minimum of four times. All variants were counted as new words except those formed by the addition of s or 's. Proper names, however, were not included in this vocabulary control. The list shows the new words by pages.
