This style portfolio was produced 'for Outside Salesman only'. It has a typed 'Important Special Note for all Outside Salesmen' laid down on the order form (not completed) facing the third suit pattern. On the inside front cover is a Specimen Copy -- Measuring Blank and, facing it, Information explaining 'How to Designatre correct Block No Customer Should Wear'. Two guarantee slips, once laid down, now loosely inserted leaving tanned glue traces. One page is tanned and there is a trace of damp at the fore-edge. Cloth-backed paper covers (foxed). Rare. Size: Folio.

A Who's Who of Expatriate Writers, first appearances by most. This copy leaves much to be desired in terms of condition: the covers are chipped and have been backed rather amateurishly, cloth spine added. Contents complete. The most difficult issue to obtain and significantly important. I have had this copy in my own collection for over 25 years! Hemingway's poem "Valentine" appears on page 42 with a photograph of him by Helen Breaker (Hanneman C187). Page 50-51 contain James Joyce's contribution with a photocopy of a corrected manuscript page. I have been unable to locate any other copy for sale.

Interior tanned (less so than usual), lower wrap with a creased corner and top corners just a bit bumped, spine with some spotting, a tears at the spine ends, and some loss at the foot affecting the printed date, a very good copy of a relatively delicate magazine produced with cheap materials. Prints "Assumption," Samuel Beckett's first published short story, as well as "Dante. Bruno. Vico. Joyce" (*Federman and Fletcher* 2 and 1.01, respectively; they describe "Assumption" as "pregnant with future Beckettian themes"). Also prints work by Gertrude Stein, Harry Crosby, Erskine Caldwell, Brancusi, G. Braque, and Hart Crane ("Proclamation," signed in type by Crane, Kay Boyle, Caresse & Harry Crosby, and a number of other authors).
