First Edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dw, now mylar-sleeved. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 399 pages; Physical desc. : xi, 399 p. ; 25 cm. Includes bibliographical references and index. Subject: Stalin, Joseph (1879-1953) --Views on Jews --Persecutions --Soviet Union --Physicians. Summary: Stalin revelled in the self-coined epithet 'Uncle Joe' because of its genial connotations. In fact he distrusted almost everyone, often with good reason, and by the 1950s he had taken to bumping off those whose eyes, noses or voices he didn't like. Even his security forces became uneasy at this degree of paranoia and the resulting slaughter, especially among Jews. Realizing this, Stalin hatched his greatest purge of all on the pretext of what became known as 'The Doctors' Plot'. In January 1953 the Russian dictator claimed to have discovered a conspiracy among Jewish doctors to murder Kremlin and KGB leaders. Pravda and other publications displayed the 'proof' of signed confessions. Ten years before the Cuban missile crisis, it seemed the world stood on the brink of another world war, for Stalin claimed that the doctors were being paid by America to bring down his regime. The increasingly unstable Uncle Joe wanted a war against his capitalist enemy. Less than two months later Stalin himself was dead. It was as fortuitous a death as could be imagined, and conspiracy theories have abounded ever since. Many believe that Stalin was poisoned by his security chief, Beria, who knew the Soviets could not win a war against the Americans. Others suggest that Kruschev persuaded Beria to commit the murder, then promptly seized power and had Beria shot. The two authors of this complex book have peeled away decades of conjecture and misinformation, largely thanks to having gained access to previously secret files locked in Kremlin vaults. The story they tell is even more bizarre than has previously been suggested, but they are careful to back up their findings with copious reference to the testimony they unearthed. Both academics, Brent and Naumov rally the evidence meticulously and without the sensationalist spin indulged in by some previous writers. The result is one of the greatest studies yet of paranoia and panic inside the Cold War Soviet Union. 1 Kg.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Oblong small quarto, printed paper covered boards in NEAR FINE condition. Inscribed by both the author and the photographer. See images provided. 160 pp., b/w photos by Misha Friedman. Actual book is pictured. See images provided. Tight binding. All pages clean without any markings, notations or folds. Synopsis A haunting literary and visual journey deep into Russia s past and present The Gulag was a monstrous network of labor camps that held and killed millions of prisoners from the 1930s to the 1950s. More than half a century after the end of Stalinist terror, the geography of the Gulag has been barely sketched and the number of its victims remains unknown. Has the Gulag been forgotten? Writer Masha Gessen and photographer Misha Friedman set out across Russia in search of the memory of the Gulag. They journey from Moscow to Sandarmokh, a forested site of mass executions during Stalin s Great Terror; to the only Gulag camp turned into a museum, outside of the city of Perm in the Urals; and to Kolyma, where prisoners worked in deadly mines in the remote reaches of the Far East. They find that in Vladimir Putin s Russia, where Stalin is remembered as a great leader, Soviet terror has not been forgotten: it was never remembered in the first place. A short, haunting and beautifully written book. Wall Street Journal About the Authors Masha Gessen is a Russian-American journalist and the bestselling biographer of Vladimir Putin. Gessen's books include The Future is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia, winner of the 2017 National Book Award for Nonfiction, and The Man Without a Face: The Unlikely Rise of Vladimir Putin. She is the recipient of numerous other awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Carnegie Fellowship, and her work appears regularly in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, Vanity Fair, and Slate. A longtime resident of Moscow, Gessen now lives in New York City. Misha Friedman regularly photographs for The New Yorker, Time, Der Spiegel, GQ, Le Monde, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Sports Illustrated, Amnesty International and Doctors Without Borders. His work has received numerous awards, including grants from the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting. He was born in Moldova and graduated from Binghamton University and the London School of Economics. He taught himself photography while working in humanitarian medical aid. He lives in New York City.
