219 x 147 mm. 8vo. 389-400; 297-300 pp. [Entire volume: vii, [1 blank], 545, [3] pp.] 1 fig. (Kapitza & Dirac). Quarter navy morocco, morocco corners, marbled boards, raised bands, gilt spine. Blind-stamp of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, Mount Wilson Observatory. Fine. FIRST EDITIONS. "Dirac's occupation with the probl…ems of quantum electrodynamics may be further illustrated by two papers of a mainly mathematical character written in the spring of 1933. Both were concerned with the possibility of generalizing the mathematical basis of quantum mechanics in order to overcome the difficulties of the existing quantum electrodynamics and secure its connection with classical dynamics. Dirac pointed out that in exceptional cases, which turned up in the theory of Heisenberg and Pauli, ordinary Hamiltonian methods were not applicable. In order to remove such 'irregularities' and obtain 'greater elegance,' he proposed a reformulation of classical Hamiltonian dynamics by introducing homogeneous variables." Kragh, Dirac, pp. 138-139. Kragh, Dirac, 1933C; 1933B.
